Z1 distribution for distribution of normal sample. No square root of (n) included for population
sample.

b) Let Z 1 =

Y 1 2 2 Y 2 2 2 Y 3 2
Y 2
, Z2 =
, Z3 =
, , Z n2 = n
,

Can we conclude that the distribution answer in 1a) is same with the distribution for

Z 12 .

Justify your answer. [4 marks]

To conclude, if (Z1, Z2, Z3, , Zn) is a sequence of independent standard normal variables
with standard normal distribution, then sum of the squares (Z n2) has the chi-square
distribution with n degrees of freedom. df = 1. It has zero mean and standard deviation. The
data represents positively skewed. Its always have positive value.

If

Z 12 +Z 22 +Z 32 ++ Z n2 = W, can we called them similar as X distribution. Explain your

answer. [4 marks]
Yes. W with sequence (Z12, Z22, Z32, , Zn) is similar to X distribution. It also has a chisquare distribution as in (i). There is relationship between standard normal distribution and
chi-square distribution. Degree of freedom is 1. The Z n is independent normal random
variables with mean zero and standard deviation. Its always have positive value. Distribution
of test statistics approaches normal distribution, while distribution of square of test statistics
approaches chi-square distribution. Thus, if we calculate using both normal distribution and
chi-square distribution will produce same result.
