Native American Myth : The Gift of

Canyons
In our Pueblo tribe, we pass oral traditions and stories down
from generation to generation. Our ancestors originally built
their houses and multi-story buildings out of canyons. Because

they are so important to our history, and there are many here in
northeastern Arizona and northwestern New Mexico, today I
am going to tell you the story about the creation of canyons.1
Earth Father and Earth Mother were no longer living in a world
of perfect harmony. After 3 million years of bliss, Earth Father
began to feel a terrible ache in his hands. He squeezed as hard
as he could to try to make it go away, but he was caught 2 in an
intense feeling of pain. He opened his devil hands wide, and
not only did the pain cease, but two men began to grow out of
his palms. These two men developed into full-grown Kachina
spirits. Earth Mother and Earth Father were ecstatic about their
new company, but suddenly the new spirits broke out into earshattering screams and shouts. Hours later, when Earth Mother
and Father calmed them down, the sons explained themselves.
They confessed that they were startled by the complete
emptiness of the world, and their new goal suddenly became to
make Earth less dull and more enticing.
While the twins 3 were thinking about how to accomplish
their goal, a new problem arose: a different Kachina spirit, the
Sky Serpent, decided that he wanted to take control of the

world. Earth Father and Earth Mother were both pacifists and

tried to find a way to work things out. However, their sons

realized that the only solution to this issue of power was a
battle. The two boys trained long and hard with each other, and
they began to develop superpowers such as invisibility,
extreme speed, and extreme 4 strength. With these helpful 5
powers, the twins easily defeated the Sky Serpent once the

incredible victory. The Sky Serpent cried when he realized he

had lost. These tears led to him become known as the god who
brought rain. Earth Mother and Earth Father were so proud of
their sons for their persistence and bravery that they decided to
give the boys a gift. As Earth Mother and Earth Father were
congratulating their sons 7 following the battle, the empty
ground they were standing on began to shake. The boys turned
and were overjoyed by what they saw. A huge layered rock 8
wall-like structure was growing out of the ground, surrounding
them. "This," Earth Mother said, smiling, "is a canyon." Earth
Father added that the canyon was a reward for the boys' hard
work 9. Each layer represents a victorious 10 moment in their
courageous fight against the Sky Serpent. Canyons continue to
bring happiness and beauty to our world, just as the War Gods
imagined and searched for 11. As you know, there is a lot of
emphasis on nature and renewal in our society. This story
explains how canyons were the start of our world's incredible
natural features and that the raining tears of the Sky Serpent
