Statement of Purpose: We want to provide a fun and unique hand cycling experience for
the children in Ability First. Ability First is a wheelchair sports camp for youth and young adults

aged 8-17 with physical disabilities. This camp has been around since 1985, and offers sports
such as rock climbing, cycling, basketball, aquatics, quad rugby, soccer, tennis, track and field,
and water skiing. Ability First provides both instruction and recreation to beginner, intermediate,
and advanced athletes. The name says it all, this camp focuses on what the kids can do, not what
they cant do.

Goals:
1. To provide an educational and fun experience that focuses on cycling and
interpretation for children with physical disabilities
a. The partners will do a practice ride and map out a structured plan at Bidwell
Park.
b. The partners will receive feedback from volunteers based on their experience
working with the participants.

Description: For this event we will be guiding 5-10 children with physical disabilities on a
bike ride through lower Bidwell Park. We will be using standard bikes, while the kids will be
using hand cycles. This ride will be a combination of bike mechanics, fun, and interpretation of
Bidwell Park. We will stop at various locations for talks, and have lunch at 5 mile recreation
area.
