A soft drink is a drink that typically contains carbonated water, a sweetener, and a
natural or artificial flavoring. Nowadays soft drink become a phenomenon that is very
popular in Indonesia, even the world. For the example soft drink brand such as Fanta is very
popular and became a widely consumed beverage. The taste of Fanta is easily accepted and it
available in many varians, including cans and plastic bottles. Beside that, Fanta can be served
cold,at

room

temperature,

even

over

ice

cubes.

This is what makes this drink quickly favored by the Indonesian people and communities
worldwide. On the other side actually this drink is very unhealthy because it contains many
chemical compounds which is can cause some health problems if we consume it continously.
Fanta contains carbonated water,sugar,acidity regulator (citric acid), preservative
(sodium benzoate),artificial flavoring,and dye (karmoisin CI 14720, yellow FCF CI 15985).
Citric acid serves to add freshness and
quality of the soft drink. But base on the
result of recent studies on the effects of
soft drink published by the Academy of
General Dentistry (AGD), the content of
the citric acid and sugar inside soft drink
has the potential to cause dental caries
and erosion of enamel. Dental caries is
an infectious disease which damages the
structures of teeth. Furthermore soft drink can cause dehydration, this happens because to
process the sugar inside soft drink our body requires a lot of water. Beside dehydration, sugar
content inside soft drink can increases risk of diabetes mellitus because the hormone insulin
in the body is not enough, even incapable to convert this sugar into muscle sugar ( glycogen )
and as the result the blood sugar ( glucose ) will rise and harm our healthy. Other research
suggests that soft drinks can play a special role in weight gain. The human body can only
process some glucose as energy and the leftover will be turn into fat.

We can consume soft drink but within reasonable limits, for example we drink it twice
a month. Nevertheless, the fresh water is the best choice to drink. If you feel bored with the
taste of the fresh water, try to consume infused water. This drink is usually made by mixing
slices of fruit or vegetable, such as lemon, orange, or cucumber, into the water to give a fresh
taste without the calories, so that the risk of illness resulting from the consumption of soft
drinks can be avoided.
