Alfred LordTennysonwasaVictorianErapoetwhosemanydifferentwritingstyles
inspiredmanygenerationsofpoetsandpoemloversalike.Manygenerationsandthousandsof
peoplelater,LordTennysonspoemsarestillreadintheclassroombystudentsorathomebythe
averageeverydayperson.LordTennysonspoemTheChargeoftheLightBrigadecontains
manyoftheaspectsofwritingfrommetaphorstodifferentoftoneanddictionthateveryonehas
cometoadore.WithananalysisofTheChargeoftheLightBrigadereaderswillbeableto
understandmoreaboutAlfredLordTennysonasapoet.
AlfredLordTennysonlivedduringtheVictorianAgebetweentheyearsof1809and
1892.Hestartedwritingearlyoninhislifebuthisbestsellingworkswereafter1850(Reidhead
1156).Hewasthefourthchildoutoftwelveinhisfamily.Hequicklygainedtheinterestin
writingandpoetry.Aftermanyquarrelswithhisfather,AlfredwassentofftoCambridge
Universitybecausehisfatherexpectedmuchmorefromhisson(Reidhead1156).Duringcollege
Alfredandhisbrotherpublishedawork,
PoemsbyTwoBrothers
,whichwasnoticedbyagroup
ofundergraduateswhohelpedtoencouragehimtodedicatehimselftopoetry.Alfredssocial
interactionsatCambridgehelpedtoincreasehisconfidenceandintellectasapoetandalsobreak
himawayfromhisshypersonality.Alfredbecameengagedtooneofhisgreatestinfluences,
ArthurHallam,sisterEmily(Reidhead1156).AlfredLordTennysonsyearsasacollegeman

cametoanendin1831whenhisfamilygotintofinancialtrouble.Hereturnedhomeand
continuedhisstudiesofpoetry.Hewascriticizedonhisfirstfewvolumesintheyears1830to
1831.Itwasntuntil1842thatAlfredsvolumesstartedtotakethestageandspotlight.His
marriagewaspostponedfortwentyyearsuntilhewasfinallymarriedin1850(Reidhead1157).
AlfredwasmorepopularthanLordByronandwasmakingaround

10,000ayear.Manycritics
saidthatAlfredssuccesswasbadforhimanditmadehispoeticpowerdecline(Reidhead
1157).AlfredLordTennysonhelpedpromptmanyreadersandmanynewpoetsontherise.His
workasapoetgreatlyinfluencedmanyandsomeofhispoemsarestillenjoyedtodaylikeThe
ChargeoftheLightBrigade.
TheChargeoftheLightBrigadeisapoemaboutaleagueofcalvary.Halfaleague,
halfaleague,Halfaleagueonward(Reidhead1235).Inthismomentitiseasytopicturemen
chargingaroundacornerintobattle.AlfredLordTennysoncontinuestopaintthesceneinthe
firststanza.Allinthevalleyofdeath,Rodethesixhundred(Reidhead1235).Alfredcontinues
totellthestoryofthebrigade.600menareridingtotheirdeathinavalley.Inthethirdstanza
Alfredwrites,Cannontotherightofthem,Cannontotheleftofthem,Cannoninfrontofthem
(Reidhead1235).Thislinegivesthereaderasenseofthetoneandathemeinthepoem.The
readercanassumethatthe600menaresurroundedandaregoingtodie.Thisiswherethe
themesofthepoemstarts.Thethemesaredeathandbravery.Thethemeofdeathisvery
prominentthroughouttheentirepoem.Boldlytheyrodeandwell,IntotheJawsofdeath
(Reidhead1235).Thislinefromthethirdstanzaistalkingaboutthemenridingtotheirdeaths
boldlyandwithpride.
