Stats and Probability

Throughout the course of the year, I have taken away my valuable lessons that will relate to my
future. During the year, we have covered a wide range of topics that covered making graphs, calculating
and analyzing data, and making inferences about differences in statistics. In the first half of the year, the
class learned about to take data samples using qualitative and quantitative analysis, and taking samples to
avoid overcounting or undercoverage. In the first project, one of my favorites, Mike and I went around
the entire township counting all of the cement and Harvestore silos. Then throughout the year, we learned
how to look at sets of sample data and analyze, graph, and make inferences about their data values.
Another valuable aspect of this class that I took away was learning how to calculate standard deviation.
Overall, I taken away a great deal of information from this class, and the lessons I have learned will come
in handy when I take this class at Iowa State.
For my future, I will be headed to Iowa State to study dairy science, and I believe that education I
have learned while in stats class will be of great use in my career field and my college stats classes. For
example, I remember one specific problem from this year, that related bacteria in milk and from a farm in
a certain time frame. This will be helpful because, if my career pathway leads me to be a milk inspector, I
must be able to look at milk bacteria counts from X farm over the last fifty days and make statistical
calculations the ralate that bacteria count to other area farms, finding X farms bacteria average, and
discovering why bacteria counts may be low or high. Overall, I feel this class has greatly prepared me for
stats classes that I will have to take as a part of my dairy science curriculum.
