Surviving a Day at College

SOUND: JUNGLE SOUNDS, BIRDS, INSECTS, ANIMALS ETC.

AMELIA: College, the place where you gain knowledge, friends and
important life skills.

SOUND: AN ALARM GOES OFF

AMELIA: Aaargh! I hate Mondays.

AMELIA drags herself off her bed and changes, slouching off into the

SOUNDS: CREAKING OF THE BED AS THE SHE GETS OUT OF BED THE SOUND
OF THE SNOOZE BUTTON BEING PRESSED

AMELIA (In her head): Yes. You will gain knowledge, friends and life
skills. But that doesnt excuse the fact that there are dangers
lurking in every corner.

SOUNDS: THE SOUND OF A TAP BEING TURNED ON AND WATER RUNNING THEN
THE TAP BEING TURNED OFF FOLLOWED BY THE SOUND OF TEETH BEING
BRUSHED

AMELIA: Great. Im late. No breakfast for me.

SOUNDS: FEET WALKING DOWNSTAIRS AND THEN A BAG BEING PICKED UP

THERES A SCUFFLE AS SHE PUTS HER SHOES ON

AMELIA (In her head): Right. Lets put our survival skills to use.

SOUNDS: THE FRONT DOORS OPENS AND THEN CLOSES LOUDLY AS SHE EXITS

-FADE OUT-

SOUNDS: A GENTLE BREEZE IS BLOWING AND A FEW BIRDS ARE SINGING

THERES A CAT.

AMELIA (In her head): I can see my destination in the distance, all
is still and unusually quiet

TRISHA: (in the distance) Hey!

AMELIA: (muttering) seriously.

SOUNDS: THE SOUND OF FEET RUNNING AS TRISHA MAKES HER WAY TOWARDS
AMELIA

TRISHA: (loudly) Oh my god! You walk so fast! I was just thinking to

myself. Hey I should join a gym

TRISHAS VOICE FADES SLIGHTLY INTO THE BACKGROUND

AMELIA (In her head): Weve drawn the attention of TRISHA, a loud
and slightly obnoxious creature that is otherwise completely
harmless.

TRISHAS VOICE FADES BACK IN

TRISHA: (Still loud) - And then he was like; you told me to get the
lemon one not the lime. I was so annoyed at him because-

TRISHAS VOICE FADES OUT YET AGAIN AS AMELIA ZONES OUT.

AMELIA (In her head): You know what screw that. Her loud shrilling
calls are painful to listen to.

TRISHA: -How about you?

AMELIA: What?

TRISHA: Were you not listening to me?

AMELIA: Of course I was listening.

TRISHA: Then what was I saying?

AMELIA: Well-

SOUNDS: THE CHATTER OF OTHER STUDENTS ENTERING THE CLASSROOM AND THE
CLOPPING OF HEELS AS A MEMBER OF STAFF WALKS OUT.

AMELIA (In her head): A tall specimen has emerged from her habitat,
thankfully this distracts TRISHA from expecting an answer from me as
were both clearly trouble.

MEMBER OF STAFF 1: What time do you call this?

AMELIA (in her head): Her growl is terrifyingly low, which is a key
sign of agitation.

TRISHA: I lost track of ti-

MEMBER OF STAFF 1: I dont care. Get in.

AMELIA (In her head): We trail into one of the many caves known as
classrooms, followed closely by the teacher.

-FADE OUT
SOUNDS: THE SOUND OF MURMURING FADES IN AS THEY ENTER THE CLASSROOM,
THE SOUND OF A CHAIR BEING PULLED OUT AND THEN SAT ON IS HEARD.

AMELIA (In her head): Weve entered her territory, its best we move
carefully as she might attack at any moment.

SOUND: Theres a noise as another student settles next to the main

character theres typing noises.
FREYA: Hello.

AMELIA: Hi.

SOUNDS: MORE TYPING

AMELIA: (sighs)

FREYA: um

SOUNDS: EVEN MORE TYPING

FREYA: Youre doing it wrong.

SOUNDS: TYPING STOPS ABRUPTLY

AMELIA: What?

FREYA: Youre doing it all wrong. Here.

SOUNDS: SCUFFLING NOISE AS FREYA LEANS OVER AND THE SOUNDS OF

TYPING.

AMELIA: Uh thanks.

SOUNDS: CONTINUES TO TYPE

AMELIA (In her head): Ah. One of the most intelligent creatures you
could come across in College; FREYA.

FREYA: No! Like I showed you.

AMELIA: Like this?

FREYA: No! How could you be so stupid!

AMELIA (In her head): That escalated quickly.

AMELIA: Geez. Dont have to be so harsh.

AMELIA (In her head): Strange, aggressive behaviour isnt common in

FREYA. Best to leave her be.

SOUNDS: GIGGLING AND TYPING AND SMALL CHATTER

AMELIA (In her head): Oh man. Now I need a piss.

AMELIA gets up and leaves to go to the toilet.

-FADE OUT-

AMELIA leaves the classroom and makes her way through a corridor and
towards the girls toilets.

SOUNDS: ECHOEING FOOTSTEPS AND VOICES FROM NEIGHBOURING CLASSROOMS

AMELIA (In her head): Ive just turned a corner and my eyes have
settled on what looks like a small pack of first-years.
SOUNDS: LAUGHTER, TALKING AND WHISPERING

AMELIA (In her head): Lets avoid eye contact or we might trigger
some wild frenzy.

SOUNDS: FOOTSTEPS TALKING AND PHONES GOING OFF AS SHE MAKES HER WAY
PAST THE GROUP.

AMELIA (In her head): Slow and steady now Almost there.

SOUNDS: FOOTSTEPS CONTINUE AS SHE REACHES THE GIRLS TOILETS, SOUND

OF THE DOOR BEING OPENED AND THEN CLOSING BEHIND HER.

AMELIA: Yes!

SOUNDS: TWO GIRLS GIGGLE AND EXIT THE TOILETS MUTTERING TO

EACHOTHER.

AMELIA looks down with embarrassment after realising there were

others in the toilets.

AMELIA (In her head): Great. Now some random people think Im
insane. At least I made it to safety though.

-FADE OUT-

Its the end of the day and people are heading out to go home.
AMELIA is exiting class accompanied by GRACE a fellow student.

SOUNDS: OUTDOOR NOISES TREES BLOWING IN THE WIND THE SOUND OF

STUDENTS TALKING AND CHILLING OUT IN THEIR FRIEND GROUPS.

AMELIA: That was such a long day.

GRACE: Real long.

AMELIA: Thats what she said.

GRACE: (sighs)

AMELIA: Hehehe Im sorry.

GRACE: Just never say that again.

AMELIA (In her head): GRACE. The type of person youd not want to
encounter on a bad day. Shes everything youd expect from an eagleeyed-positivity-killing beast.

AMELIA and GRACE walk past a couple on a bench.

AMELIA: Wow. Theyre going all-out.

GRACE: Ugh. This is why I hate people.

AMELIA: Youd hate people even if theyre standing at your doorstep,

with the cure for cancer and a solution to world hunger.

GRACE: Touch.

AMELIA: I mean remember the other day?

SWIFT TRANSITION - FLASHBACK

AMELIA: Hi GRACE!

GRACE: Ugh. Not you again.

SWIFT TRANSITION BACK TO PRESENT

AMELIA: Or yesterday

SWIFT TRANSITION - FLASHBACK

GRACE: Do you have a pencil?

AMELIA: Oh. I gave my spare pencil to TRISHA. Sorry.

GRACE: Ugh. I hate people.

SWIFT TRANSITION BACK TO PRESENT

GRACE: Yeah. Good times, good times.

AMELIA: Well, have fun being angry at the world for no reason.

GRACE: I will. Seeya.

AMELIA and GRACE part ways as they leave the college campus.

AMELIA (In her head): What a day it has been. I survived in one
piece and with all my dignity in-tact. I better prepare for
tomorrow, another round of wild animals to discover.
