Goal: design a microstripline-fed slot-coupled patch antenna operating
at 2.425 GHz using the same substrate with thickness 1.6 mm, . The return loss must be less than 20 dB at 2.425 GHz. 1.

Continue from Tutorial 1, Step 14. Rename tutorial1m.geo to
tutorial3.geo. After reviewing the vertex coordinates, we found the length of the patch is approximately 37.5 mm. Use Edit>Select Vertices to select the corner of the patch. Then, use Edit->Object Properties to check its coordinate. Delete the whole structure and recreate the patch with size mm2. Build a slot on the ground with dimension mm2. Build the microstripline on the bottom layer. Let the length of the open stub be about , therefore, the total length is 40 mm. Set advanced extension port on the microstrip line and adjust the reference plane to the center of the slot. Perform a simulation from 1 GHz to 3 GHz. 1

From the simulated result, the resonant frequency is not correct.
Set up a variable to adjust the size of the patch. Perform a tuning of this variable to see at what size it will be closest to match.
8.
From the above equivalent circuit, our strategy is optimizing the
patch size such that its real part of impedance is equal to . Then, adjust the length of the open stub to tune out the imaginary part. Perform an optimization of patch size such that its real part of impedance is equal to . Set up a variable to adjust the length of the open stub. Optimize the open stub to reach perfect match.
