Literary Translation Masterclass in Malm on September 25

Translators offering stylistically polished work adaptations rather than straightforward
translations can charge higher rates and build rewarding relationships with loyal customers.
Part of the challenge lies in having the confidence to see yourself as a writer rather than as a
humble servant.
Ros Schwartz applies the literary translators creative skills to her commercial work and has
found that producing polished prose, no matter how clunky the original text, is one factor
distinguishing top-end translators.
Following on from Ross Saturday talk on Making translations sing, this hands-on masterclass
will be an opportunity to tackle literary texts, focusing on questions of style and looking at the
myriad decisions involved. In this two-part session we will analyse a translation to identify ways
it can be improved stylistically, then polish a draft translation of a literary text. The aim is for
attendees to feel emboldened and to leave armed with concrete techniques they can apply to their
specific field of translation.
