MONTHLY ACHIEVEMENT REPORT

Quepos Community Development Program
August 2014

Title: Encouraging Creativity through Afterschool Workshops

Objective: Increase enrollment in primary school through dynamic lessons

Summary: Volunteers work tirelessly to plan and present workshops on arts and crafts, English games and Science experiments.

Report:
This month our volunteers started afterschool workshops in two of our locations. First of all, in our sites in Costa Rica, the school day is split between the
morning and the afternoon. Half of the students have classes in the morning
and half have classes in the afternoon. This made scheduling workshops challenging as some had to be before school and others after school. Special
credit needs to go to our fabulous staff for working with the teachers and principals to find gaps in the school day when children who were not in class could
attend the workshops.

Once the schedule was in place, we
opened the task up to our volunteers.
Very quickly, a sign was posted in both
schools announcing workshops. After a
trial week with just Arts and Crafts, the
volunteers at Damas School were
ready to strike out for English games
and Science Experiments. The students
eagerly came to school early and
stayed late to try a human body and
label it in English, watch a can of soda
explode, and make beautiful plates out
of magazines. In Cocal, the volunteers
recently prepared a Pirate themed
treasure hunt! The challenges involved
sport, English, math, and arts.
The workshops have really taken off
and now kids request them on a daily basis. This month our volunteers have
really given the local kids a reason to come to school.
