Materials Language

Materials for childrens language should


comprise of familiar objects, objects
which are common to the students daily
lives. Students will start to count using
arbitrary units, these may include
blocks, books, pencils, hands and feet.

Mathematical Language

Students are beginning to use complex


materials during this stage. Metre ruler,
trundle wheel, centimetre cubes

Symbolic Language

Mathematical technology i.e. rulers,


scaled maps and tapes.

The language for length in the


childrens language stage will be
primarily using words with a basic
concept. This may include find,
tall short thick thin long
wide
Direct comparison which one is
longer/shorter/thicker/thinner etc.?
In addition to the childrens
language the students are also
required to engage in counting the
materials used to define the
measurement. more less

between objects.

Examples of language may include


using the correct measurement
centimetre, metre dependent on
the materials.

Students should be writing out the


numbers and perhaps using the basic
symbols in their records.

Students will be describing the
measurement through counting.

The use of standard units is now
