Core Proposition 1: Teachers are committed to students and their
learning

1.1 The

teacher recognizes individual differences and knows the

backgrounds, abilities, and interests of his or her students and uses
this information to differentiate his or her approaches to students and
instruction.
1.2 The

teacher demonstrates an understanding of how students

develop and learn.
1.3 The

teacher creates a respectful environment that provides

opportunities for equitable participation and supports students in
developing positive dispositions toward learning.
Commendations: The learning environment you create with your students is
exceptional. It is well organized with clearly established expectations and routines in
place. Collaborative, safe, respectful, and high student engagement are all descriptors
that speak to the climate of your classroom. It is clear that you understand the
strengths and area(s) of need for your students. Varying the way in which you group
students for cooperative learning activities speaks to your understanding of your
students social/emotional and academic needs. While you sometimes make groupings
randomly, group students prior to the activity (unbeknownst to them), for this activity
you group students in partnerships that complimented each other. Because of the
nature of the activity and the pace in which students needed to work (30 sec rotations),
you paired students using a variety of factors such as reading ability, leadership, and
ability to focus really well together.

Recommendations: Explicitly model with students, prior to the activity, what they
will do if they do not agree on an answer during the activity.
Core Proposition 2: Teachers know the subjects they teach and
how to teach those subjects to student

2.1 The

teacher demonstrates an understanding of how knowledge

and skills in his or her subject domain are created, organized, and
linked to those of other disciplines as appropriate .
2.2 The

teacher creates learning experiences that make the discipline

accessible and meaningful for learners to ensure mastery of the
content.
2.3 The

teacher plans instruction rich in higher order thinking to meet

clearly identified goals and objectives for student learning.
Commendations: The lesson focus was on "transitional words" which is part of an
Opinion Writing unit. Clear objectives were communicated to students: Transition
words play an important role in helping to communicate our thoughts fluently in our
writing . This allows the reader to understand ideas more clearly.
The design of the lesson required all students to be actively engaged in the learning
process.
Recommendations:
Core Proposition 3: Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning

3.2 The

teacher encourages and clearly communicates expectations

for student involvement in the learning process, which results in a
high level of student engagement.
3.1 The teacher establishes an organized and efficient learning environment that involves and engages.

3.3 The

teacher employs multiple methods to regularly measure

student growth and progress and uses this information to provide
feedback and adjust instructional decision-making.
Commendations: When students were asked to transition to the
carpet for the writing mini lesson, they did so quickly and quietly.
Nice job reviewing expectaitons: "empty hands, eyes up here, and
talking one at a time."
Excellent job with the organization of the learning activity. Premade student groupings, task cards, rotation timerare all examples
of skilled planning and facilitation. "Thumbs up really high to
indicate you are ready" and a variety of sounds to prompt students to
move from station to station were cues your students responded very
well to, indicating that a strong foundation had long been
established. Students clearly understood the expectations.

Overall comments: Sean PCS is very fortunate to have a skilled teacher as yourself.
The classroom environment you create for your students is outstanding. You do a
wonderful job giving specific praise to students. Your instructional practices are
outstanding. I would like to see you challenge yourself to take on a mentor and/or a
leadership position.
