Lifespan Development

Semester 1 2012
Dr. Diana Lea Baranovich

Hypothetical Identity Scrapbooks

Final Project
The Project:
In small groups of threes, your group will be reconceived with a brand new identity.
Over the semester you are to discuss the life of people in this culture (subculture)
from birth until 80 (or life expectancy of culture). You will do this in scrapbook
fashion.
ILL SHOW SCRAPBOOKS FROM LAST YEAR
Objective:
The purpose of this project is to have the students inquire and investigate the
lifespan development of a person from a very different culture. This is an
anthropological dimension to this course; for instance, a person living in a primitive
village in Africa experiences adolescence very differently from an affluent girl in
Florence, Italy.
Keep the following in mind:
a. Scrapbook pages should be at least A3 in size. OK if bigger. All three
dimensional; I want to hold, touch and feel none of this virtual computer
(two dimensional stuff).
b. Paper should be very think and sturdy
c. You will need at least 50 sheets 100 pages when you use front and back.
d. Get background of the country, culture and lifestyles of the people via
internet, national geographic magazines, etc.
e. You will need to consider the religion, socio-economic class, standard
celebrations, rituals and living conditions of the person and his family.
f. You will need pictures as well as factual information
g. Colour, cut, paste, decorate however you would like be creative.
Note: I have given you the basics of the culture, heritage, socio-economic status and
major event. You are to fill out the rest of the cultures story. You can be as creative as
you like; however, be REALISTIC.
Part One: (Of course this is just cut and paste information)
a. A map of the country and the geographic information of the country.
b. Important facts about the country, historical information, important places
and things about the country.
c. Pictures of the house, neighbourhood and family members of the person.

Part Two:
The Lifespan Have pictures and journal entries. Write journal entries in
first person. You can write by hand keep it neat. Yes, I know, a baby wont write in
a journal. Well, you will.
Think in life stages again think of major life events that happen during this time
and how the culture celebrates them, etc.
People get married what is the customary ceremony with the culture/religion. Is
there a rite of passage at adolescence. The Hindus have some celebration when the
girl starts her period whats this all about. Affluent Europeans have Debutante balls
when the girl is 16.
Life stages can be divided something like ...
Birth
Birth 3
3 6 years
7 12 years
Teenage years
Each decade 20s through the 70s (death at 80)

Part Three:
A Formal Essay (Intro, Body and Conclusion) Well discuss this more
toward the end of the semester.
In view of Eric Ericksons Theory of Psycho-social Development, what was the
developmental stages of this person. Did he develop normally or was there delays or
gaps caused by culture, environment, etc....
