Plant Shutdown Procedure and Action in the Event of a Refrigerant Leak

In the Event of a Malfunction or Emergency

Emergency devices installed will stop the plant via the control system in the event of a
malfunction or high level ammonia leak in the plantroom.
Should any item of plant sound abnormally noisy or be vibrating, press a local "emergency stop
lock".
IF IN ANY DOUBT BEFORE RESTARTING THE PLANT, CONTACT THE SERVICE
PROVIDER.
In the Event of a Carbon Dioxide Leak
In the event of an emergency such as a CO2 leak, the main priority is to EVACUATE THE AREA
URGENTLY and prevent others from entering until an experienced Refrigeration Engineer
arrives.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ISOLATE THE LEAK YOURSELF. Refer to COSHH information
contained within this manual.
CO2 in the liquid or solid state can cause cold burns to exposed skin. In the gaseous state, CO2
is heavier than air so a leakage can result in the production of pools of inert atmosphere in low,
unventilated areas. Although there is a small percentage of CO2 in the air we breath, and it is
essential in regulating breathing, prolonged exposure to higher concentrations of the gas can
lead to headaches, exhaustion, asphyxiation, paralysis, loss of consciousness and ultimately
death.
