Vet: Weyer visiting nations capital for the first time

We jumped out and the
man began to run away,
Weyer said. I got off a shot
with my .45 and Im pretty
sure I wounded him. That
was the last time we had to
worry about people stealing
from the truck.
Despite a truce in place,
Weyer said he and other
troops had to worry constantly about invasion from
the north.
We knew there were lots
of troops just a few miles
away past the demilitarized
zone, Weyer said. We
knew at any moment they
could try to cross the DMZ
and start the fighting all
over again.
Meanwhile as Weyer
served in Korea, Marion, his
wife of about three years,
remained in Wisconsin.
I wrote to him at least
twice a week and he wrote
back, Marion said. I know
the war was over, but being
in Korea it could have started all over again at any time.

Photographs of veteran Norb Weyer seen Tuesday afternoon at his home in Richfield. Weyer will take part in a
Stars and Stripes Honor Flight this Saturday. Weyer
served with the U.S. Army from 1954-1956. BELOW: A
photograph of the USS General William Mitchell that veteran Weyer sailed on is seen Tuesday afternoon at his
home in Richfield.
I was so happy when he
finally came home.
Weyers wife stayed with
her sister while Weyer was

overseas, who lived in

Menomonee Falls.
She lost her husband in
World War II, Marion said.
I was glad to be able to stay
with her because it would
have been hard being alone
while Norb was gone.
Weyer said hes glad he
served in the military.
I learned a lot about discipline and working with
others, Weyer said. I think
it would help us today if
everyone had to serve some
kind of mandatory military
service. A lot of people today
need to learn discipline and
how to work with others.
When he got out of the
military, Weyer eventually

began to work with his

brothers building houses.
The business improved
enough that they could
make a good living.
We built all of the homes
in this development and a lot
more elsewhere, Weyer
said. Were probably responsible for 75 percent of
the strip mall development
here.
Weyer said he still works
with
Weyer
Property
Development which is operated by his three sons.
I still work half a day
from 6 a.m.-6 p.m., he said
while laughing.
Weyer will be escorted on
the trip by his grandson,
Alex.
It was his mother, my
daughter-in-law Joan Weyer,
that found out about this
opportunity and filled out
all the paper work for me,
Weyer said. It will be nice
to have my grandson with
me.
Ive
never
seen
Washington, D.C.
Joan said she applied for
her father-in-law because
she felt he deserves the
recognition.
He never really talks
about when he served, Joan
said. I think him taking the
trip with other veterans will
give him a chance to talk
more about his experiences
in Korea.
Alex said hes proud to
accompany his grandfather.
Ive been there before on
a family vacation, but it will
be fun seeing the sites with
my grandfather, Alex said.
