Carbon Bootprint Wallchart

Which nations fans have the lowest carbon footprint
when watching their team?
The Carbon Trust has conducted analysis on the 24 nations competing in Euro 2016 to
compare the carbon emissions produced when watching their teams.
This tournament wallchart is based on the carbon emissions from electricity use related
to an individual fan watching one match on a television in their home country.

Iceland are the winners thanks

to having huge clean energy
resource that can be accessed
relatively cheaply. Almost all of
the countrys electricity comes
from harnessing abundant
hydropower and geothermal
energy.

Tournament hosts France

produce around three-quarters
of their electricity from nuclear
power. The country is also a
major exporter of clean
electricity to neighbouring
countries, including the UK.

Runners-up Albania provide

almost all of the countrys
electricity using hydroelectric
power stations. Albania is
currently building new plants to
meet the countrys growing
demand.

Semi-finalists Switzerland and

Sweden share a similar low
carbon electricity grid mix,
made up primarily of a
combination of hydroelectricity
and nuclear power.

Poland is the
worst-performing country in
Euro 2016 on grid carbon
emissions, with the country
producing the vast majority of
its electricity from coal.
