Iwouldliketousethecompasspointswithseveralofmystudentsasatooltodevelopselfawareness,reflectivethinking,asanassessmentoftheir
understanding,andultimatelybearesponsiveteacher.Mygoalistousethiswithtwodifferentstudents.MyfirststudentIwouldliketouseitwithisin
writingdeveloping/expandingwritinghabitsandgoals,assessinghisunderstandingofhisownprocessandawarenessofhiswritingself,andoveralla
checkinwithhimtohelpmeconferandberesponsivetohisneedsalearner.Theotherstudentsfocuswouldbewithinreadalouds.Thepurposeforthis
wouldbetohelphimdevelopandunderstandhisthinkingasatextisbeingread.Throughthebook,ReadingInTheWild,Iamdevelopingreflective
questions/ideastosupporthimthroughtheseandmakehisthinkingvisiblebyusingthecompasspoints.

Goalsettingisatheoreticalandevidencebasedstrategytosupportpersonalizedlearningandprovidestudentswithchoice,independence,anddeeper
understandingofhis/herownlearningprocess/path.Mygoalistousethisasatooltopromoteloveofreadingandwriting,balancemyapproachwith
studentleadworkwhilemeetingstudentsIEPgoalsandtheexpectationsthatcomeswiththat.Myhopeistousethisasatoolformyowngrowthand

Myoverarchinggoalwhenteachingliteracyistodevelopaloveofreading.Formostofmystudentsthisisadifficulttaskduetobeingselfconscious(i.eI
cantread,orreadingistoohardforme.),ordevelopmentallevelisataprereadingstage.Therefore,Iwouldliketoincorporatemoreopportunitiesfor
mystudentstoaccessbooksindependentlytopromotetheirversionofindependentreading.Ithinkitissoimportantforthesestudentstodevelopan
enjoymentofreadingandtheirlisteningcomprehensionisthebestoutletforthemtoinspirethatlove.

opportunities,likepeermentoring.Byonlyofferingastandardformofinteractingwithbooks/literacyinstructiondoesnotmeetherneedsasalearneror
reader.Shetakesprideindesigningactivitiesforyoung/prereadingstudents

Iwouldliketousetheaccordionbooktotrackmystudentsthinkingduringreadalouds.Theaccordionbookwillbefilledwithdrawingsversusstudents
writingtheirthoughts.Manyofmylearnersarediscouragedbywritingandbecomestuck,myhopeisattheendofthestorytousetheaccordionbookasa
reflectiontooltothendiscusshowthebookchangedovertimeandhowweasreaderschangedourthinkingovertime(thatpieceistiedinwiththe
compassstrategy).

andwhytheychoosenottoreadthenbuildawarenessaroundthat.Tobuildacultureofreading,Iwillusereadaloudsandvisiblethinkingstrategiesasa
tooltotrackourgrowthovertimeasalistener.Myhopewiththisistobuildtheloveenoughtothenadventuallyreleaseitintotheirhandsandbeginto
