Principles
for
Materials
Good Language
Teaching Materials
• are based on sound theoretical learning principles;
• arouse and maintain learners' interest and attention
• meet the learners' needs and background;
• provide examples of language use;
• provide meaningful activities;
• provide opportunities for authentic language use.
Effective Language
Teaching Materials
• present functional language in a context;
• present realistic and authentic language models;
• promote purposeful use of language;
• include an audio-visual component;
• foster learner autonomy;
• cater for individual and contextual differences.
• engage learners affectively and cognitively.
Adopting
Developing
Adapting
Any course books or business textbooks can be
utilized as adoption materials. Yet, employing a
textbook calls for evaluation to choose the
materials most suited to the course's goals and
objectives, as well as the students' linguistic
abilities and learning preferences. As an alternative
or in addition, educators can use real-world
materials like news articles, flyers, newsletters, etc.
Key Components in
Developing Materials
1. Gain attention- Catch the attention of the learner.
2. Inform learners of objectives- What the learners should expect in learning
the material.
3. Stimulate Recall or prior Learning- Relate the new material to previous
knowledge.
4. Presenting the content- Present only what is relevant
5. Provides Guidance- Provides visual aids and/or examples
6. Elicit performance- Give time for the learners to Practice
7. Provide Feedback- Inform them why their response is either correct or
incorrect.
8. Asses performance- Evaluations
9. Enhances the Retention and transfer- Application of Knowledge
While customizing materials, it is important to consider
the course objectives, the learning environment, and the
academic success of the students. Teachers should assess
the chosen materials as they are preparing the items.
Teachers must think about the sort of format
adaptation, choose the activities to be adapted, and
decide how to modify them to get the most out of the
material after potential problem areas have been
identified.
Criteria in Adapting Materials (The 4Cs)
Culture, Cognition, Communication and Content.
Culture
-Is the content appropriate to the group?
-Does it promote global or intercultural understanding

Cognition
-Is the material engaging?
-Does it stimulate higher or lower order thinking skills?
Criteria in Adapting Materials (The 4Cs)
Culture, Cognition, Communication and Content.
Communication
-Does it include opportunity for sharing or interacting?
-Is the content language matched to the learners?

Content
-Is the content suitable to the level and age of the group
-Is it relevant to the syllabus/topic?
-Is the amount appropriate to the capabilities of the learner?
