1. Objectives:
To measure flow rates using the volume time method and to estimate the accuracy and precision of
the collected data.
2. Equipment:
Figure 1: Hydraulic Bench
3. Procedure:
1. Turn on the pump by flipping the switch.
2. Open the valve slowly to start the flow. Do not turn it on full blast.

3. Adjust the valve to obtain the desired flow rate , wait for 20 sec to
make sure the flow rate is steady ( or is changing slightly enough to collect your
readings)
4. Record the time that it takes for the bucket to fill the specified volume.
5. For the same flow rate repeat step 4 another two trails.
6. Change the flow rate by opening the valve.
7. Repeat step 4 and 5 for four different flow rates.
4. Theory:
The volumetric flow rate, (also known as volume flow rate, rate of fluid flow or volume velocity) is the
volume of fluid which passes through a given surface per unit time. The SI unit is m/s (cubic meters per
second). In US Customary Units and British Imperial Units, volumetric flow rate is often expressed as
ft/s (cubic feet per second). It is usually represented by the symbol Q.
