least the students! Welcome to the 2016 GSIS Primary School Sports
Awards.
My name is Toby Meek. I am the Chairperson for the Sports Council.
I would like to introduce you to the sports council members who will
host the Sports Awards tonight.

TOBY It's always a joyous occasion when we can come together

to celebrate the great work of our students, our staff members,
coaches and parents. Sports really does bring our school community
together to work as one big GSIS family team.
We will be talking about all the qualities that knit together to make
sports ECA training sessions, friendly matches, internal school
competitions and major championships the great success that they
are. The GSIS family team all play a significant role in this success.

We will talk about one of these qualities and then present individual
awards for a specific sport. Please note that the members of the
Sports council have written their own speeches.
Sports will be introduced in alphabetical order.
As with all the sports, we will firstly announce the specific award and
then announce the nominees. There are six awards per sport. It is an
honour in itself to be nominated for an award as, in the eyes of the
coaches, nominees are all strong candidates to win the award.

receive their cup. When all six winners have received their cup we

There are many attributes that make a person successful in life be it
at school, the workplace or on the sports field.
Motivation is one such attribute, and motivation is something that
GSIS students and their parents have in abundance.
Motivation inspires us to dream, to reach up and forwards and to to
drive us to be the best person we can be.
Motivation gives us the energy to keep going when others have
already stopped

TEAM WORK
Teamwork is evident everywhere in the sports world at GSIS.
Students helping each other with bags on the way to ECAs; students
lending their spare hats when their friend has forgotten theirs;
encouraging other students with words of praise or reassurance;
students congratulating each other when a personal target has been
met: clapping their teammates to the finish line even though they
finished a few minutes ago; working and giving their all to help their
teammates dreams come true.
We really could go on and on with so many examples.
It is not just our students that are excellent team workers but also
our parents in the school community. Our parents share their
enthusiasm , their energy their drinks and refreshments, their
support and spirit not only with their own child but with so many of
their childs teammates and friends.
The saying Together we conquer is such a true saying.

If you were to be a fly on the wall in any sports ECA or at any
sports competition then you would be inspired by the level of
passion that our students display again and again. There are many
people who have the skill set to achieve in life but it is this fire in
the belly; this incredible passion that burns in their heart that
makes them achieve their goals.

There were two schools who trained three times a week to try to
beat our biathlon team. The mistake here is not to out train GSIS to
beat them but they have to out spirit them and this is virtually
impossible.
Spirit provides the energy for a bird to soar higher than those
around it!

As humans we all face the wall where it just seems too hard to
carry on and fight. GSIS students have an unprecedented level of
determination.
From hugh Levett chasing the ball from going out of the boundary at
cricket ECA, to Toby Meek saving the 15th penalty shot at him in a
hockey shoot out as goalkeeper; to Tanaya and Mahi Ghia for never
stopping in the cross country races; to Charlie Ruffy and Alexis Lee
battling to the end of the course at the running Championships; to
Ben Bosch fighting to reach his 50th cricket run: to Katy Lim beating
every girl and boy at the biathlon championships.
Determination allows the unthinkable to become a reality!

each and every GSIS student the seed of skill has been nurtured and
grown by all by hard work and sheer effort.

where GSIS students have outsmarted their opposition at ECAs or
matches.
Smart thinkers coupled with a good level of skill is a guaranteed

Behind every true male or female world sports super star is a
humbling personality that respects others and is grateful for what
they have. At GSIS we have so, so many students who show
fantastic sportsmanship time and time again.
They say you see a persons true personality, strength and
sportsmanship when they are down or loosing. Anyone can be
positive in victory it is the disappointments and how we handle
them that really show our true colours.
We are very proud of how the GSIS students handle themselves,
both at ECAs and competitions, and the level of sportsmanship they
show.

However talented out GSIS students are , they still need the support
and platform that the school provides. We thank the school for

providing a program that allows so many students to grow and

flourish and in so many different activities.
A good sports programme needs the support of the schools leaders
and here at GSIS we certainly have that support!
To the class teachers who show such interest in what their students
are doing in the sports field. Such care and concern does not go
unnoticed.
We are very fortunate to have so many great external coaches who
are able to pass on their expertise in a calm, positive and
challenging manner. We again thank the school in recognising the
importance that these experts have on our students development.
And to our great internal staff coaches who give up time at the
weekends and after school to support and develop our young sports
girls and boys. Your familiar faces and enthusiastic and positive
manner is an important ingredient to a safe and fun learning
