SUNCs 2015-2016 SEASON

SUNC 7s finished top of their Intra-Mural (IM) League, with 61 points, winning 20 out of 22 games this
season. The 7s reached the Quarter-Finals of the Intra-Mural Netball Finals before being knocked out
by History with a close score of 21-20. The 7s have also had games against King Edwards School and
The University of Birmingham, winning both games 33-0 and 31-29 respectively. Players player for
the season went to Typo.
SUNC 6s finished second in their IM league, with 55 points. They reached the Semi-Finals of the IM
Netball Finals before being knocked out in a close scoring game against Maths at 18-16. Players
player went to both Dizze and Rex.
SUNC 5s have two more games left to play within their division, currently maintaining a comfortable
second place in Division 3 within the South Yorkshire Netball League. Players player went to
Doughball.
SUNC 4s have had a brilliant season, finishing top of their Northern 9B league. This will result in a
well-deserved promotion into the Northern 8B league in the 2016/2017 season. Players player went

INTRA-MURAL VARSITY 2016

Intra-Mural Varsity saw a few members of SUNC
play against Sheffield Hallam University. Both
squads played brilliantly, smashing Hallam in
both games and coming out on top.
In the same morning, SUNC saw a few of our
Development players take a trip to play the
University of Leeds. Although both games were
very tight, Leeds just managed to pull away and
win both games against SUNC.
Regardless, to end the SUNC-filled day (we
referred to it as Super SUNC Saturday), the
evening saw a few of the girls celebrating their wins by enjoying a few tunes at Pop Tarts at the
Students Union.

VARSITY 2016
What a brilliant day! Also known as EIS day,
Varsity 2016 truly displayed what SUNC is all
about. There was grit and determination from all
girls who played on that nail-biting Monday down
at the EIS.
1pm saw the 4th team take to the court. It was a
very calm and collected performance from all
members on the squad. After the first two
quarters, University of were ahead, with Rachel
Kirk and Bethany Pitts accuracy with their shots
being second to none. By the last quarter, the
Fours had pulled away from Hallam, winning the
Netballs first point of the day.
After the excitement of the Fours game, it was
time for the 3rd team to take to the court. The
Threes displayed drive and grit throughout their
game, especially as Hallam started to pull away in
the third quarter. Going into the final quarter,
Hallam are up by 5. The threes manage to catch up, and with a minute left, take the score to 36-36.
However, due to an unheard whistle, Penni Vidlers (Fiddler) shot is disallowed, resulting in a 36-35
win to Hallam. A heart-breaking loss for the 3rd team.
The 2nd team took on Hallam at 5pm. Unlike the other teams, this was the first time Sheffield 2s had
played Hallam 2s, with Hallams 2s being a league above our 2s. Breaking away very early within the
first few minutes with a 5 point lead, Hallam soon started to put the pressure on, resulting it a tight
game for the girls. The score sat at 10-10 after first quarter, with Hallam pulling away ever so slightly.
Regardless, the 2nd team put up a fight and by the fourth quarter they were only three down. However,
2

the last quarter did not go the way we wanted it to, and unfortunately, the 2s had a disappointing
finish, with the score finishing at 52-33 to Sheffield Hallam.
The final netball game of the day saw the 1st team display levels of determination and drive, after
losing to Hallam twice within their BUCS league. Each and every member of the 1st team played
outstanding, with a well-deserved lead of 11-6 after the first quarter. A strong defence and accurate
shots resulted in the 1st flying away with a brilliant win of 42-36; a truly remarkable game. You can
watch the games here @ forgetoday.com/varsity/2016/live-eis-monday/

The Sports Awards

Last month, a few members of committee and final years represented SUNC, as well as
supported a few of our nominees, at the 10th Sports Awards.
Lena McGuffie-Newnham (Outback), GA for the first team, was nominated
for Best Freshman of the year. Outback, an international student from
Australia, who is currently completing her Masters in Human Osteology
and Funerary Archaeology, found her place within SUNC straight away.
Jumping straight into the firsts, Outbacks commitment to training and
fitness sessions did not go unnoticed. Although she did not win her
nomination, without a doubt, it was very much well deserved.
The evening also saw Liz Bailey (Bevvy) and Charlotte Bayes (Crispy) pick
up a Black and Gold Award for their endless commitment and time given to
SUNC. Josie Appleby (Pikey) and Lucy
Searle (Clammy) was also recognised
for their outstanding commitment to the club.
The evening saw members of SUNC away from the fancy dress
for a classy time, whilst enjoying a fun evening, celebrating
commitment and improvement within Sport Sheffield with other
sports clubs.

End of Season Meal 2016

SUNCs End of Season Meal saw the club celebrate each others achievements whilst giving all of
us an opportunity to say farewell to our final years.
Coachs player went to Typo (7s,) Dizze (6s), Lactose (5s),
Hairy (4s), Fiddler (3s), Rampant (2s) and Pikey (1s). After a
few glasses of wine and a three course meal, speeches were
made and committee
did their handovers it
was
a
delightful
evening.
The club would like to
say a massive goodbye and good luck to our leavers: Outback,
Razor, Crispy, Bhaji, Gnarly, Tarzan, John, Bevvy, Rampant,
Squirtle, Hurdle, Gobble, Digit, Bell, Ghetto, Corgi, Stamp,

SUNC hit the road

BIRMINGHAM
Back in February SUNC Development took to a trip to
The University of Birmingham a SUNC first! The
7s played first, with the first three quarters very tight. However, drive and
passion from the 7th team saw them pull ahead, winning their first away
game against another university with a close score of 31-29. A mixed team
made up of the 5s and 6s saw them put up
a brilliant fight against Birminghams
second Development team, however
Birmingham were able to pull away and
win the second game. It was a brilliant day
out for the girls and hopefully we will see
more away games like this SUNC
Development.

WARWICK
March saw a few of the girls take a trip to
Warwick for their annual netball
tournament. SUNC had two teams
participate in the tournament, with Bevvy
captaining her team to a victorious win
against the other universities participating
in the tournament! We hope to see SUNC
back in Warwick next year, taking home
the trophy once again.

NOTTINGHAM
April saw SUNC Development participate in a Development-Only
tournament held at The University of Nottingham - also new for SUNC
Development. After an early 7.30 start, with a quick breakfast on the bus
down to Nottingham, a combination of the 5th, 6th and 7th teams took to
the court. After a SUNC verses SUNC game, with SUNC B taking the win, the
teams played brilliantly against Nottingham Trent University and The
University of Nottingham. SUNC As took fourth place, with SUNC Bs taking
home the winning trophy. It was a great morning away for SUNC
Development.

SUNC reach 1000

2015/2016 has been an incredible charitable year for SUNC, resulting in a brilliant 1000 raised for
our chosen charity Weston Park Cancer Hospital. Crispy, SUNCs charity secretary for 2015/2016 has
done a brilliant job organising endless volunteering opportunities for
members of the club, including running a series of after school club
netball sessions through Project Buzz and holding several glow stick
selling sessions at nights out at the Students Union.
Alongside that, the club held a Macmillan coffee morning, raising 50
from just tea and cakes! Back in November and December the club
participated in the Spider Walk, performed a few Christmas carols to the
general public and entered a photo for the Sports Committee Naked
Calendar.
We also had members of the club run in the Yorkshire half marathon,
raising just under 200 between them. Varsity saw the first SUNC charity
quiz, which we opened to other sports clubs. It was great fun and a different way to spend a
Wednesday evening. During EIS day all girls in the club got together
to create and sell black and gold bracelets, all again, going towards
our charity pot.
Most recently the club got involved with the Sport Sheffield Mental
Health awareness campaign with all teams donating and promoting
the campaign by wearing blue and purple laces during our games.
Our total was higher than estimated targets, an accomplishment we
are all very proud of. Our volunteering projects have made an
impact within our local community, whilst providing contact for
both young girls and boys to play netball.

Heres to the 2016/2017 season seeing the club improving on 1000 for chosen charities:
Sheffield Mencap & Gateway and The Jessica Hope Foundation.

Old, old Girls

Meet Rehab, SUNCs Club Captain in 2008/2009, who now

works for ITV News as a broadcast journalist. We caught up
with her to ask her a few SUNC related questions

A Q&A with our Alumni

Name (And Netball name): Natalie Morris a.k.a Rehab
Years in SUNC: Three glorious years
Position(s): Goal Keeper, Club Captain in my second
(2008/2009)
Degree studied: English Literature

year

Netball mum and daughter (granddaughter, if relevant):

Mum: Lazy; Daughters: Toad and Nips
Favourite social theme: Skittles... or anything involving full body paint basically. Snazzaroo FTW.
Worst thing you had to do as a SUNC fresher: Downing an entire bottle of Korean white wine... I don't
even think anyone made me do that.
Best SUNC memory: LITERALLY too many. The entirety of third-year tour. Winning Varsity in third year.
Water fights in rugby corner in Juice/Roar. Any time in the Rave Cave. Breakfast Club on second year tour.
All Christmas Juices - I could go on.
Tell us a bit about what you do now (career wise) and how you went about getting your job: I'm
currently a broadcast journalist with ITV News London - this is a new role for me and I'm really enjoying it.
It basically involved newsgathering, shooting, editing and working towards the daily news programmes it's pretty intense and can be really exciting.
I have just finished an intense nine-month trainee scheme with ITV News and I'm delighted to have been
offered a job at the end of it. I don't know if news is where I want to be long-term, but it's really invaluable
experience and an unrivalled training ground. Before this I was the Editor of England Netball Magazine for
three years, which I absolutely loved. It was incredible to be able to combine my love of journalism and
writing with my love of netball. It was a perfect first job and I definitely aim to return to sport (particularly
women's sport) at some point in my career.
After graduating from Sheffield I completed an MA in Film Production - which I definitely think has helped
me in my career. I've found it really helpful to have a wider variety of skills than just my degree, and it was
good to do something practical after years of theoretical essays.
