Introduction
VMwareFusionallowsyoutorunyourfavoritePCapplicationsonyourIntelbasedMac.Designedfrom
thegroundupfortheMacuser,VMwareFusionmakesiteasytotakeadvantageofthesecurity,flexibility,and
portabilityofvirtualmachinestorunWindowsandotherx86operatingsystemssidebysidewithMacOSX.

What Is a Virtual Machine?


Avirtualmachineissoftwarethatbehavesjustasaphysicalcomputerdoes.Avirtualmachinecontainsa
display,aharddisk,oneormoreprocessors,memory,aCD/DVDdrive,anetworkadapter,andaUSB
controllerallvirtualized.Thatis,theseelementsofavirtualmachineareallcreatedbysoftwareandstored
infilesonyourMac.
ThevirtualmachinerunsinawindowonyourIntelbasedMac.Youinstallanoperatingsystemand
applicationsinthevirtualmachineandoperateitasyouwouldaphysicalcomputer.
TheMacthatyourunavirtualmachineonissometimesreferredtoasthehost.Inthiscontext,thevirtual
machineisreferredtoasaguest.

movesto64bitwiththeIntelCore2DuoandXeonprocessorsand64bitnativeoperatingsystems,you
arereadytodaywithVMwareFusionanditsexclusivesupportfor64bitoperatingsystemsinvirtual
machines.

YoucanuseVMwareVirtualSMP.OnMacswithmorethanoneprocessorcore,youcanuseVMware
Fusiontopoweronavirtualmachinethathaseitheroneortwovirtualprocessorsassigned,taking
advantageofthemulticoreIntelprocessorsintheIntelbasedMacs.

Takeasnapshotofyourentirevirtualmachineinaknowngoodstate,andreverttothatsnapshotwhen
somethinggoeswronginyourvirtualmachineforexample,whenyourvirtualmachinepicksupa
virus,orwhenasoftwareupgradecausesproblems.

VMwareFusionsupportshighspeedUSB2.0forahugerangeofdevices.Evendevicesthatdonothave
driversforMacOSXwillworkinavirtualmachine.

NetworkwithyourMacseamlessly.Or,youcansetthetypeofnetworkconnectionforthevirtual
machine,lettingthevirtualmachineshareorobtainitsownIPaddressorisolateitfromthenetworkand
host.Networkingoptionsare:bridged,NAT,andhostonly.VMwareFusionprovidesfullsupportfor
Airportwirelessnetworking,includingvirtualmachinesbehindaNATfirewallandbridgedtothelocal
Airportnetwork.VMwareFusionsupportsuptotenvirtualnetworkinterfaces.

Youcanconnectanddisconnectanypreconfigureddevicesinyourvirtualmachine,andconfiguresome
featuresofvirtualhardwareanddevices.Youcanaddvirtualharddiskstoyourvirtualmachinefor
increasedcapacityandadjusttheallotmentofvirtualmemoryforyourvirtualmachine.

Youcanmovetextbetweenthevirtualmachineandthehostquicklyandeasilybycopyingandpasting,
andyoucanmovefilesbydragginganddropping.Youcanalsosetupsharedfoldersonyourhost
computer,soyoucaneasilysharefilesandfoldersbetweenyourvirtualmachineandyourhostcomputer.
Tousethesefeatures,youmusthaveVMwareToolsinstalled.

NOTEYoumusthaveenoughmemorytorunMacOSX,plusthememoryrequiredforeachguestoperating

Supported Guest Operating Systems


VMwareFusionsupportsover60guestoperatingsystems,includingWindows3.1throughWindowsVista,

Installing or Upgrading VMware Fusion


IfyouareupgradingVMwareFusion,youdonotneedtouninstalltheversioninstalledonyourcomputer.
VMwareFusionupgradestheexistingversionautomatically.
NOTEInrarecircumstances,theoperatingsysteminavirtualmachinecanquitunexpectedlyinawaythat
leavessomevirtualmachineprocessesrunning.Thissituationcanpreventyoufromupgradingoruninstalling
VMwareFusion.Inthiscase,theinstallationoruninstallationAssistantmightdisplayamessageindicating
thatyoucannotinstalloruninstallVMwareFusion.Toworkaroundthisproblem,youcanusetheMac
ActivityMonitortoforcevirtualmachineprocessestoquit.Seethetopic
Troubleshooting > Forcing Virtual Machine Processes to QuitinyourVMwareFusionHelp.
To install or upgrade VMware Fusion

IfyouareupgradinganexistingVMwareFusioninstallation,makesurethatnovirtualmachinesareopen
andthatVMwareFusionisnotrunning.

ClickthedownloadlinkandsavetheapplicationtoyourMac.TheVMwareFusiondiskimageissaved
toyourdefaultdownloaddirectory:VMwareFusion<xxxxx>.dmg,where<xxxxx>isthebuildnumber
forthedownloadrelease.

DoubleclickVMwareFusion<xxxxx>.dmgtomountit.
ThecontentsofthediskimagearedisplayedinaVMwareFusionFinderwindow

BrowsetotheVMwareFusionvolume,anddoubleclickInstallVMwareFusion.pkgicontolaunchthe
InstallationAssistant.

FollowtheinstructionsintheAssistanttoinstallVMwareFusion.
Attheendoftheinstallation,theAssistantpromptsforyourserialnumber.

Enteryourserialnumber.
Ifyoudonothaveaserialnumber,clickGetSerialNumbertogototheVMwareWebsite,whereyoucan
licenseVMwareFusionandgetaserialnumber.
Youcancontinuewithoutenteringaserialnumber,butyoucannotpoweronavirtualmachineuntilyou
haveenteredavalidserialnumber.YoucanenteryourserialnumberatanytimebychoosingVMware
Fusion>Licensing.

Starting VMware Fusion


To start VMware Fusion
IntheApplicationsfolder,doubleclickVMwareFusion.app.
TheVirtualMachineLibrarywindowisdisplayed.Fromthiswindow,youcancreateavirtualmachine,
browseforanexistingvirtualmachinetoopen,openavirtualmachineyouhaveusedrecently,orgotothe
VMwareTechnologyNetworkWebsitetodownloadpreconfiguredvirtualmachines.
Forinstructionsonconfiguring,running,andclosingVMwareFusion,seetheVMwareFusionhelp.

Creating Your Windows Virtual Machine with Windows Easy Install


WhenyoucreateaWindowsvirtualmachine,youcanuseVMwareFusionsWindowsEasyInstallfeatureto
automaticallyinstallWindowsandVMwareToolsinyourvirtualmachine.VMwareFusionwillcreateyour
virtualmachine,automaticallyselectthedefaultWindowsinstallationoptions,andinstallVMwareTools,
whichloadsthedriversrequiredtooptimizeyourvirtualmachinesperformance.Youcanalsochoosetohave
WindowsEasyInstallautomaticallymakeyourhomefolderavailabletoWindowsasasharedfolder,soyou
cansharefilesbetweenthevirtualmachineandyourMac.
WindowsEasyInstallisavailableforthefollowingWindowsoperatingsystems:

WindowsVista32bit,WindowsXP,Windows2000

Server:WindowsLonghorn(experimentallysupportedonly),WindowsServer2003,Windows2000

IfyouarenotusingoneoftheseWindowsoperatingsystemsinyourvirtualmachine,oryouwanttoinstall
theoperatingsystemmanually,seetheVMwareFusionHelpfordetailsoncreatingvirtualmachines.
To create a Windows virtual machine using Windows Easy Install

FromtheVirtualMachineLibrarywindow,clicktheNewbuttonorchooseFile>New.
TheNewVirtualMachineAssistantlaunches.

IntheIntroductionpanel,clickContinue.

IntheOperatingSystempanel,selectanoperatingsystemandversionforthenewvirtualmachine.

IntheNamepanel,enterthenameforthevirtualmachineintheSaveasfield.
Bydefault,thevirtualmachinewillbesavedinyour<user>/Documents/VirtualMachinesfolder.To
browseforadifferentlocation,selectOtherfromtheWherefield.

IntheVirtualHardDiskpanel,setthemaximumsizeforthevirtualharddisk.
TheAdvancedDiskOptionssectionprovidesthefollowingchoices:

AllocatealldiskspacenowThisoptiongivessomewhatbetterperformanceforyourvirtual
machine.However,ifyouallocateallthedisknow,youwillnotbeabletousetheVMwareTools
shrinkdiskfeaturelater.Allocatingalldiskspacenowisatimeconsumingoperationthatcannotbe
canceled,andrequiresasmuchphysicaldiskspaceasyouspecifyforthevirtualdisk.

Splitdiskinto2GBfilesSelectthisoptionifyourvirtualmachinewillbeusedinaharddrivewith
afilesystemthatdoesnotsupportfileslargerthan2GB.

UseanExistingVirtualDiskSelectthisoptiontouseanexistingvirtualdisk.Entertheexisting
virtualdisk(.vmdk)file,includingthepath,orclickChoosetobrowseforthefile.

IntheWindowsEasyInstallpanel,selectUseEasyInstall.

EnteryourName,Password(optional)andWindowsProductkey.
TheentryintheNamefieldisdisplayedininformationboxesasthenameyourWindowssoftware
isregisteredto.ItisnottheWindowsusername.TheentryinthePasswordfieldisthepasswordfor

SelectEnablefilesharingtohaveWindowsEasyInstallconfigureyourhomefolderasashared
folder,soyoucansharefilesbetweenthevirtualmachineandyourMac.

IntheFinishpanel:

IfyouareinstallingWindowsfromaninstallationdisc,putthediscinyourMacCD/DVDdriveand

imagefile,andbrowsetothefile.

ClickFinish.
VMwareFusioninstallsWindows.Thiscantakeupto45minutes.AfterinstallingWindows,VMware
FusioninstallsVMwareTools,andpowersonthevirtualmachine.

Creating a Virtual Machine from the Boot Camp Partition


BootCampisApplesoftwarethatenablesanIntelbasedMactorunWindowsXP.ButBootCamprequires
youtochoosebetweenMacorWindowsatboottime.BootCampcreatesseparateMacandWindows
partitionsonyourharddisktocreateadualbootenvironment.YoucanuseyourWindowsXPBootCamp
partitionasaVMwareFusionvirtualmachine.Thisenablesyouto

UseyourBootCampvirtualmachineandyourMacwithoutrebootingandswitchingbetweenthem.

SharefileseasilybetweenyourBootCampvirtualmachineandyourMac,throughsharedfolders,andby
dragginganddroppingfilesorcuttingandpastingtext.

NOTEVMwareFusionofferscompletesupportforWindowsXPinaBootCamppartition.Formoredetails

andclickRun.

EnteryourMacpasswordtoaccesstheBootCamppartition.
YoumusthaveadministratorprivilegestousetheBootCampasavirtualmachine.VMwareFusion
createsavirtualmachinefromyourBootCamppartitionandstartsWindows.

AfterWindowsbootsfromyourBootCampvirtualmachine,VMWareFusionstartstheinstallationof
VMwareToolstoenablefullvirtualmachinefunctionalityandoptimizeperformanceforyourBootCamp
partitionwhenusedasavirtualmachine.Followtheonscreeninstructionsandrestartyourvirtual
machinewhenprompted.

WhentheVMwareToolsinstallationiscomplete,rebootyourcomputer.

ThefirsttimeyoupoweronyourBootCampvirtualmachineafterinstallingVMwareTools,youwillneedto
reactivateWindows.
NOTEIfVMwareToolsisnotinstalled,andyoureactivateWindowsinyourBootCampvirtualmachine,and
subsequentlybootyourBootCamppartitionnatively,youwillbepromptedtoreactivateWindows.
ReactivatingWindowsinyournativeBootCamppartitionwillresultinyourBootCampvirtualmachine
requiringreactivationthenexttimeyoupoweriton,andsoforth.InstallingVMwareToolssolvesthis
problem.IfyouhaveVMwareToolsinstalled,youwillneedtoreactivateWindowsonlywhenyoufirstpower
onyourBootCampvirtualmachine.

Quitting Your Virtual Machine


VMwareFusionssuspendfeatureletsyouquicklysavetheentirecurrentstateofyourvirtualmachine,
includingallrunningapplications,soyoucanreturntothisstatewithoutrestartingyourvirtualmachine.
UsingtheSuspendcommandinsteadofShutDownletsyougetbackupandrunningquickly.
Tocompletelyshutdownthevirtualmachineinstead,usetheShutDowncommand.
NOTEBootCampvirtualmachinesdonotsupportthesuspendandsnapshotfeaturesbecauseyoucanreboot
intoWindowsusingBootCamp,whichwouldinvalidatesuspendandsnapshots.

Uninstalling VMware Fusion


TakethefollowingstepstocompletelyuninstallVMwareFusionfromyoursystem.
IfyouareupgradingVMwareFusion,youdonotneedtouninstalltheversioninstalledonyourcomputer.
VMwareFusionupgradestheexistingversionautomatically.
NOTEInrarecircumstances,theoperatingsysteminavirtualmachinecanquitunexpectedlyinawaythat
leavessomevirtualmachineprocessesrunning.Thissituationcanpreventyoufromupgradingoruninstalling
VMwareFusion.Inthiscase,theinstallationoruninstallationAssistantmightdisplayamessageindicating
thatyoucannotinstalloruninstallVMwareFusion.Toworkaroundthisproblem,youcanusetheMac
ActivityMonitortoforcevirtualmachineprocessestoquit.Seethetopic

Poweroffallrunningvirtualmachines,andquitVMwareFusion.

InthemountedVMwareFusiondiskimage,doubleclickUninstallVmwareFusion.app.

Whenyouarepromptedtoconfirm,clickUninstall.

Enteryouradministrativepasswordtobegintheuninstallation.
Whentheuninstallationiscomplete,aconfirmationmessageisdisplayed.
