The Mayflower
Ten years later on 1st January 1885, the Royal Torquay Yacht
Club merged with the Torbay and South Devon Club which
was founded in 1863 and the name of the combined entity
was changed to the Royal Torbay Yacht Club. In the following
year, the freehold of the land on which the Club premises
stood was purchased for the sum of £650.
In 1886, the Club held its first Regatta over three separate
days in June, July and August when the prize money
ranged from £4 to £25. Thereafter, it was the practice
to hold a Regatta on one day in each year and within
two years the prize money had increased substantially
to between £40 and £60. In 1914, the Regatta was
abandoned because of the outbreak of war.

ACCESSIBILITY
There are direct motorway, rail and air links to the English Riviera.
It is only 191 miles from London and 185 miles from Birmingham
with the M5 motorway reaching Exeter from the Midlands, London
and North. There are also mainline rail connections to Torquay.
Exeter, Plymouth and Bristol airports offer regular national and
international flights.
CLIMATE
The English Riviera has one of the most equable climates
in Britain. The long warm summers and mild winters
combined with an east facing Bay, create a haven for
palms and other sub-tropical plants. Sunlight hours
exceed the national average. Balmy autumns, fresh
springs and mild winters first established the resort as
Britain’s favourite during the times of the Napoleonic
War. The balmy climate has since nutured cherished
palm trees and the wellbeing of visitors.
Average temperature readings around the world
during the months of July and August 2009:
Marseille 30°C Genoa 29°C
Torquay (Torbay) 20°C Helsinki 19°C
