WELCOME TO
THE ROYAL TORBAY YACHT CLUB
Originally founded by a group of gentlemen back in 1863, some
twenty years later on 1st January 1885, the Royal Torquay Yacht Club
merged with the Torbay and South Devon Club and the name of
the combined clubs was changed to the Royal Torbay Yacht Club
(RTYC).

Today it is a thriving Club and extends a warm and friendly

welcome to members, their guests and visiting yachtsmen.
Throughout the year we have active racing, sailing and
social programmes. There is never a dull moment; the club
is constantly buzzing.

Our fully facilitated clubhouse is the perfect place to

meet fellow yachtsman and take in the fantastic views
of Tor Bay’s sailing waters. Conveniently located the
club is just a stones throw from the bustling nightlife
of Torquay with its many bars, restaurants and night
clubs.

Over the recent years, attention has been

concentrated on ways of improving the Club’s
facilities and providing the members with a club
in which they can be proud. These measures have
included schemes for re-development of the
premises, the formalising of the Club’s business
management as well as continuing to seek new
members and to host prestigious waterborne
events.

HISTORY
In 1875, the Torquay Yacht Club was formed in a room in the Queens
Hotel with Sir Lawrance Palk as Commodore. The new club was granted
an Admiralty Warrant to fly the defaced Blue Ensign and later in the
year, was granted a Royal Warrant, with the club’s name being
changed to the Royal Torquay Yacht Club.

Ten years later on 1st January 1885, the Royal Torquay Yacht
Club merged with the Torbay and South Devon Club which
was founded in 1863 and the name of the combined entity
was changed to the Royal Torbay Yacht Club. In the following
year, the freehold of the land on which the Club premises
stood was purchased for the sum of £650.

In 1886, the Club held its first Regatta over three separate
days in June, July and August when the prize money
ranged from £4 to £25. Thereafter, it was the practice
to hold a Regatta on one day in each year and within
two years the prize money had increased substantially
to between £40 and £60. In 1914, the Regatta was
abandoned because of the outbreak of war.

During the second World War, the Club suffered

many difficulties including bomb damage. Urgent
repairs had to be carried out in 1944 on the billiard
room ceiling which had become dangerous. More
seriously, because of the war, in 1945 and 1946
whisky was rationed in the Club with members
being restricted to two single or one double per
day with no whisky being served on Tuesdays or
Fridays!!

In 1948, the XIV Olympiad Sailing Regatta was

held in Torbay, the Club subscribing £256 to the
expense account and also giving a cocktail party
for participants and Committee.

HISTORY Continued
During the 1950s a bar was built (members previously being served by
staff in the Club rooms), the Festival of Britain Regatta was held, the
Club provided a room as an office for the GATT conference and the
Edinburgh Cup races were sailed in Tor Bay.

In 1961, the Torquay Corinthian Yacht Club amalgamated with

the Royal Torbay Yacht Club and the merged organisations then
continued to operate under the latter name. Needless to say,
the merger brought with it an increased membership and also
an additional Flag Officer, a second Rear-Commodore.

The Club was honoured in 1964 to have a crew of members

selected to represent Great Britain in the Olympic Games
in Tokyo in the International Dragon Class. They finished
just outside of the medals in fourth place after lying
second for most of the week.

Throughout the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s,

the Club continued to host many prestigious sailing
championships including, amongst other events,
the One Ton Cup and the Dragon Gold Cup and
has managed to achieve a justified reputation as a
leader in race management and organisation to
this day.

In 1993, it was agreed that the members of

Torquay Rowing Club who had been neighbours
in the harbourside premises, should also become
members of the Club and have continued to be
so ever since.

MEMBERSHIP
Royal Torbay Yacht Club prides itself of being a very friendly club extending
a warm welcome to members and their guests. Membership is open to
anyone who has a keen interest in the water; you do not have to be a
boat owner to join the Club and social members are welcome.

We have various membership categories and at present there

is no joining fee. If you would like to apply for membership a
proposer and seconder is required for each application other
than for junior applicants. These persons have to be Club
members who have been members in their own right for
at least one year. If you know no-one who fits the bill as
proposer or seconder, do not be disheartened - contact
the Club Secretary who will be happy to advise you on the
procedure under such circumstances.

We have an all year round club events and social

calendar and we actively encourage member
participation. The emphasis is very much on fun
here at the Royal Torbay Yacht Club. Anyone who
is interested in becoming a member is welcome to
drop in at any time to look around and have a chat
or call the Club Secretary.

AND WORLD EVENTS
RTYC offers excellent facilities both on and off the water to host,

from the smallest of dinghies to large racing yachts up to 3 metre
draft. The waters of the Bay are amongst the best sailing areas in
Western Europe and the facilities of the Resort provides all the
accommodation, restaurants and other services required. The
Club has a wealth of experienced race officials to help events
run smoothly and efficiently.

Testimonials
‘I just wanted to thank you all for really first class race
management during the RS700 Nationals – in pretty
difficult conditions you seemed to make all the right calls.
I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.’

‘I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for

the hospitality and brilliance of your race team, shore
crew and galley. Despite very challenging weather
you managed to put in 10 good races, some would
argue nine as the wind dropped to nothing in one
race.
It is so refreshing to see such competent race
management and a team that listen to the
competitors and give them what they want. Well
done! Most notable is the speed in which you
managed to turn the races around keeping the
hanging around to a minimum.
I can’t thank you enough for a great week, this
is the second time I have been to Torbay, the
first time I felt exactly the same so I had some
feelings that the second visit would not live up to
my expectations, however that was not the case.
I hope that we as a fleet can visit you again in the
coming years.’

SAILING IN THE BAY
• Tor Bay is a fantastic venue for sailing events. Home of the 1948
Olympics, the Club plays host to major world and national events up to
the present day. The Bay is five miles across by two miles wide with no
obstructions. Depth of water is an average 10 metres across the Bay
at low tide. Tide streams are usually less than 1 knot in the Bay.

• A new 12 metre wide slipway allows launching at all tide

states into a well protected harbour, giving racing in any wind
direction. The minimum water depth is up to 2.5 metres at low
water springs in the harbour and some berths are available
at 3 metres depth on low springs.

• The new Town Dock for keelboat events allows a large

area of pontoon berths with a minimum of 2.5 metre
depth, joined to the quayside and close to the Club.
The adjacent MDL marina provides additional visitors
berths.

• Other than East and South Easterly winds the

Bay has excellent shelter from high seas with the
prevailing West to Southwest winds, which give truly
perfect sailing conditions.

• The Club has highly experienced race

management teams with a dedicated 34  ft
committee boat, support boats and mark layers.
The racing water is just outside the harbour so
for many events the Bay provides a natural
amphitheatre for spectators.

• Courses are usually set within the Bay, using

GPS, away from the shore but inside the tide line.
This gives true winds with minimal tide effect.

SHORESIDE FACILITIES
The excellent gradient of the new 12m wide slipway is not affected by the
tide. At the top of the slip there is space to accommodate launching
trolleys and there are two fresh water taps for hosing down.

Dinghy parking is available for between 20/30 dinghies as well as

parking for 100 boats along the adjacent pier.

The new Town Dock is linked to the shore and has a large
events pontoon to accommodate visiting yachts, with the MDL
marina adjacent.

The Club owns its own 1 tonne crane which is situated on

the South Pier. Heavier lifts can be undertaken by the local
stevedore.

There are toilets and showers in the Club changing

rooms as well as public facilities adjacent to the dinghy
park.

The two level car park is just 30m from the dinghy
park and just 50m from RTYC. Weekly car park
tickets for any of the Torbay Council car parks
are available from the Tourist Board next to the
harbour.

VISITING YACHTSMEN
It is always a pleasure to welcome visiting yatchsmen and we encourage
use of our fully facilitated clubhouse and welcome visitors to join in our
various social, cruising and racing activities. Being in close proximity
to Torquay town centre, there is an abundance of accommodation
from B & B to four star luxury, a whole host of restaurants and for
the more adventurous, plenty of night life.

We have a large events pontoon to accommodate visiting yachts

and a crane situated on South Pier for boat lifting. There is a
large council car park adjacent to the quay; the clubhouse is
just one minute from this car park and two minutes from the
dinghy park and yacht berths.

TORBAY YOUTH SAILING TRUST
(TYST)
In the autumn of 2007 a few Royal Torbay Yacht Club members met
to see if a way could be found to encourage children to try sailing.
Out of this meeting the Torbay Youth Sailing Trust was formed, under
the umbrella of the Royal Torbay Yacht Club. Charitable status was
achieved in the spring of 2008.

The Trust decided early on to follow the Royal Yachting

Association Syllabus and joined the RYA On-Board Scheme
designed to introduce a million children to sailing before
2012. Money was raised and six club members trained as
dinghy instructors. Initially, three Laser Pico Dinghies were
purchased and a fourth was loaned. The Trust’s facilities
were inspected by the RYA and permission granted to
conduct RYA sailing courses.

In 2008, four two day courses were run for children

between the ages of 8 and 13. Sixty-one children
attended these courses, with the majority gaining their
RYA Stage Two Certificate.

From the outset the Trust was keen to involve parents

and encourage children who enjoyed the sailing
experience to continue by joining the RTYC junior
section. Junior RTYC membership is included
in the course fees. The Trust aims to keep its
sailing equipment in good condition with all of
the Instructors fully qualified and CRB checked.
The Trust uses the facilities of the Royal Torbay
Yacht Club and runs its sailing courses from the
harbourside in Torquay.

THE ENGLISH RIVIERA
LOCATION
The English Riviera is set around Tor Bay, South Devon, one of the most
beautiful bays in Europe, and includes the three towns of Torquay, Paignton
and Brixham.

ACCESSIBILITY
There are direct motorway, rail and air links to the English Riviera.
It is only 191 miles from London and 185 miles from Birmingham
with the M5 motorway reaching Exeter from the Midlands, London
and North. There are also mainline rail connections to Torquay.
Exeter, Plymouth and Bristol airports offer regular national and
international flights.

CLIMATE
The English Riviera has one of the most equable climates
in Britain. The long warm summers and mild winters
combined with an east facing Bay, create a haven for
palms and other sub-tropical plants. Sunlight hours
exceed the national average. Balmy autumns, fresh
springs and mild winters first established the resort as
Britain’s favourite during the times of the Napoleonic
War. The balmy climate has since nutured cherished
palm trees and the wellbeing of visitors.
Average temperature readings around the world
during the months of July and August 2009:
Marseille 30°C Genoa 29°C
Torquay (Torbay) 20°C Helsinki 19°C

ACCOMMODATION

has an unrivalled selection of accommodation.
There is an abundance of B & B’s, budget and 3
& 4* hotels, many of which have views overlooking
Tor Bay. The Torbay Tourist Board will be pleased
