The Benefits of segregated schools

Nowadays, many people believe that segregated schools have more advantages for childrens
education. However, others consider that these can give negative impacts on childrens
development. This essay will argue that males and females should be educated separately as
single-sex schools provide better teaching methods and alleviate gender stereotyping of
students.
In terms of teaching methods, single-sex schools offer two main advantages in a learning
process. Firstly, March and Townsend (2007) point out that teachers in segregated schools are
able to produce curriculums which suitably matched to the learning styles of male and female
students. In addition, these authors state that instructors can select lesson topics which catch
the imagination of a given gender. Secondly, educators are able to use strategies in the allfemale classroom and in the all-male classroom which do not operate well in mixed school
classrooms (Strong et al., 2000). Moreover, March and Townsend (2007) say that teachers
have a chance to appeal boys and girls directly. For instance, they indicate that females prefer
to choose discussion while boys evolve on rivalry and keeping score.
Moving on to gender stereotyping, segregated schools provide more freedom for students to
explore their natural abilities. According to Goh (2000), in boy schools, boys have a freedom
to act as themselves, to learn deeply what they really want to and to sharpen their talents
which can be regarded as non-macho chase. For example, Glover and Bryant (2008) say that
in all-boy classroom, a boy who likes cooking, arts, painting, or drama does not need to be
ashamed about his interests. Similarly, girls are released from a responsibility to play a
closely defined gender role (Goh, 2000). To give an example, in the all-girl classroom, a girl
who enjoys computers or arts has much greater freedom to express herself and pursue what
she wants (Glover & Bryant, 2008).
In conclusion, it can be seen that segregated schools are a better system of schooling since
they improve learning process and offer much freedom in sharpening talents. Therefore,
students expecting to have more suitable teaching, and education without gender stereotyping
should be educated at segregated schools.
