Facial Recognition

A facial recognition system is a computer application that is able to identify a

person using only their face, it is also the process where the brain recognize,
understands and interprets the human face. The face reveals significant
social information, like intention, attentiveness and communication.
This type of system identifies facial features by extracting landmarks from
any image or face given. This works by analyzing the relative position, the
size or shape of the face, the eyes, nose and mouth basically the whole
features of the face. With this, analyzing the application will find an image
that matches within the system that has the same features of the face.
Further in technology the three-dimensional facial recognition software has
been introduced as a significantly higher more accurate than the twodimensional facial recognition software. The 3D facial recognition software
works by measuring the geometry of the features on the face. With the 3D
face recognition lighting, face expressions and make-up wont effect as the
2D did.
The facial recognition system is part of software where you also find certain
biometrics that are the finger-scan, hand-scan, retina-scan, iris-scan, voicescan and signature-scan. Amongst these techniques, facial recognition is not
the most reliable. However, an advantage is that it does not require the
cooperation of the person to work.
Critics complained that this system as of 2004 has never recognized a
criminal, despite several criminals in the database. The facial recognition
industry has made many useful advancements in the past decade however
the need for higher accuracy remains.
