Story and Photos A Trip to Cusco, Peru and surrounding area with

What I got was an in-depth history of Incan culture as well
by late afternoon there was a noticeable improvement in
my ability to ambulate and climb stairs.

Seattle, Diane and Ryan from St. Louis and myself. Carlos
spent the first hour determining our altitude adjustment,
our mental state as well as our preparedness for what was
to come. We got a long lecture on sanitation challenges
and the importance of using our bottles of Purell. Then
we started our tour of Cusco, in the rain. This was the rainy
season in Peru, so we became well-acquainted with our
rain gear. None the less, our tour of the Ican Temple of the
Sun, within the Spanish Monastery was impressive. We
learned that the entire temple was cloaked in gold sheets
with solid gold statutes placed throughout. This is what
attracted the Spanish explorer, Pizarro, who eventually found
and pillaged Cusco. Most of the gold artwork was melted
down and sent to Spain. Little Incan gold art survived.

A fabulous dance routine, choreographed by Janet
Harrison, was the start of the annual season-ending
luncheon at the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club.
Founder and coordinator of The Coastal Clay Courters,
Ms. Harrison, always says, “It all starts with love.” If you
attended the event, you could feel the love and admiration
everyone had for this fine lady, and for each other, as well.
The group of 50 year-old plus women from the
surrounding area has been together since 1994 and still going strong.
Each club/group of women put on a little entertaining skit and/or dance for
all to enjoy. Hugs and good-byes followed, vowing to “get together” in October.
The Clay Coastal Courters season is October through April.

RELAY FOR LIFE

OF DEERFIELD BEACH & LIGHTHOUSE POINT
By Jon Frangipane
Cancer survivors and their caretakers
were honored at the Annual Relay for Life at
Quiet Waters Park last month. Despite
threatening weather, the scheduled events
went on as usual.
After opening remarks by Deerfield Beach
Mayor Peggy Noland and Lighthouse Point
Mayor Fred Schorr, festivities began with the
national anthem sung by two elementary
school girls.
On hand was Event Co-Chair Carol
Landau who had undergone three operations
a little over a week before the event. With her
drive and determination, she is a shining
example to all those unfortunate people
who develop this dread disease. It was so
good to see her.
There was no shortage of talent with the
rock band Luminotti, followed by Uproot
Hootenanny, a live auction, saxophonist
Marcus Howell featured during the
Luminaria ceremony, as well as a host of
other singers, dancers and poets.

The Classic Car Show, sponsored by Tom Sheehan and held

in the Shoppes at Beacon Light was greeted with a good deal of
enthusiasm, despite the fact that quite a number of car
shows had been presented locally in the previous few
weeks.
On tap for entertainment was talented Lighthouse Ally
Point teenage vocalist, Ally Loren, who opened the Loren
program with folk and rock favorites, including some of
her own compositions. Alone on stage, with just her
guitar, the 18 year-old showed great style and polish in
her renderings. We should be hearing great things from
Ally in the near future. Robbie

Featured musical act was Robbie Hilliard (aka Robert

known rock bands in the past and showed that he can
still deliver on stage with his own originals as well as old
favorites such as City of New Orleans. Hilliard recently
signed a long-term recording contract and his band can
be seen on YouTube.

Do Galley Grille
Restaurant
at the Lighthouse Point Marina

One of the best kept secrets of South Florida is the Dockside

Galley Grille Restaurant at the Lighthouse Point marina. Only
boaters or Lighthouse Point residents and their friend would
know of this charming restaurant for it is tucked away in the
residential section of Lighthouse Point. Located directly across
from the pastel colored town homes, the Dockside Galley Grille
sits at the marina, overlooking the beautiful yachts and fishing
boats that sway in their dock space. Whether you sit outside at
the terrace or indoors where the floor to ceiling glass window
give uninterrupted view of the marina, you forget that you’re
just a few miles from Federal Highway. More aptly, you think that
you were in Bimini or Key West, with no cares or worries in your
mind. How fortunate it is for Lighthouse Point to have such a
heavenly place right here in their backyard!
The open ceiling, painted blue to extend the skyline or
perhaps the waterway, has several bright colored fish figurines
hanging to give the restaurant a playful, relaxed atmosphere.
Various pictures of the ocean and nautical instruments on the
wall seemed well suited to the marina look. Several of the tables
have a multitude of blue, green, and yellow pebbles that form
fish designs for diners to enjoy while waiting for their order. Pop
tunes from the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s as well as from today softly
played in the background to create a casual ambience. All the
details of the restaurant, the aesthetic look and feel of it seem to
have been perfectly chosen.
Owners Michael Kridlow, the chef, and Nikki with
their two lovely daughters.

In meeting Nikki Kridlow, the owner, it is not surprising that

the restaurant exudes such casual beauty and flair. With the
most mesmerizing hazel eyes that are slightly hidden by her long
bangs, Nikki greeted me as if I had known her all my life.
Flashing her picture perfect smile, she
made us feel at home and spoke with
enthusiasm for her restaurant business.
“We fell in love with the restaurant and
the area.” said Nikki. “We would love
to keep it (the restaurant) forever. My
girls grew up here. Everybody knows
each other. It’s a family type of place.”
She said that her “loyal locals” have
found her restaurant by word of mouth.

Hi, my name is Miles Stifl and I turned 10 the other

Later on, we drank some

Retirees Must Make (At Least)

Five Key Financial Decisions
Once you retire, you’ll have several financial and
investment decisions to make. Here are five of
them:
How much will you spend each year? Your
spending habits will affect your investment
decisions.
How should you balance your investment
portfolio to provide sufficient income and
growth opportunities? You’ll need both growth
and income potential during retirement.
How much should you withdraw each year from your
investment portfolio? You need to withdraw the right amount to
avoid depleting your portfolio.
From which accounts should you begin taking withdrawals? You
may want to withdraw from your taxable accounts first, followed by
your tax-deferred accounts.
When should you take Social Security? You can get bigger checks
by waiting, but your choice really depends on when you need the
money.
After you’ve made these key decisions, you can create the financial
strategy you need to enjoy an active, fulfilling retirement.

Boat World — Passion and Love For Boating!
Passion and the love for boating is what keeps our team running
here at Boat World. We have the perfect team to support Boat World
and our customers’ needs In these trying times and” keep the wheels-
a- turnin”. The start role is our owner Dan Hunt behind the wheel and
followed up by his wife Lise Hunt in Finance and accounting. John
Scott heads up the sales center and Mike Bumaca our Master Tech,
keeps-m-running! This team having together over 80 years of
experience efficiently makes sure that there are nothing but smiles on
every customers face, whether they come in to get parts, service
their existing boat, or possibly just pick out a new one.
Having Factory certified service for Yamaha- Mercury-Honda and
Suzuki gives us a leading advantage to getting you Factory
authorized and warranted parts for your peace of mind. All motors
on boats now are very much like automobile motors, they all have
computers running the operations of fuel systems, shifting and Marina Mar: Our new location
acceleration in some cases. These systems need proper attention
and annual services to keep them in perfect running order and we
want to make sure every boater is safe out on the water!
We also are now offering a 20 point inspection on
your annual service for no-charge. This includes
Navigational lights- fuel systems, even down to your
expiration of your current flare kit!
2009 was a treacherous year in the marine industry
as a whole. Many factories were forced to cut back
production in many cases up to 80%. With some not
making it out, many changes have occurred and your
local dealers have had to change ways they do business.
Getting back to the basics has been one of the most
attended matters. Our consumers are the utter most “The “A” Team: John Scott/Sales Manager,

One of our major decisions was to up and move our establish-
ment to a centralized waterfront facility to better serve our local
boaters. Marina Mar located next to Shooters by Oakland Park Blvd
Bridge has given us a opportunity to better service our past boat
customers. Now you are able to just boat-on-in for your annual
service and needs. In the past we have spent many hours of ramp
time using trucks- trailers and much encumber some ways to try to
be able to meet customers, and now they just pull up an dock their
boats, and it has made a difference. Our family has been serving the
local boaters on the water for over 30 years here in Broward county,
and it was time to team up with them again.
Having solid boat lines has made a difference also. Stamas Yachts-
