MEDIA ALERT
Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction
launch in Sanur, Bali, Indonesia 18 May 2009

13 May 2009, Bali, Indonesia – Once again Bali will be the focus of the international world,
particularly in ASEAN. UNISDR along with the World Bank and members of ASEAN will conduct a
series of events to reduce disaster risk.

Ttropical cyclones, floods, earthquakes, droughts and other natural hazards are constant threats to
our modern society, rich or poor. In early May 2008, approximately 140,000 people in the Myanmar
cyclone were killed or injured. Within weeks another disaster occurred in China in which around
80,000 lives were lost.

The United Nations is launching a First Global Report that identifies increasing disaster risk factors
and recommends 20 disaster risk reduction actions that will reduce poverty, safeguard
development and adapt to climate change, with beneficial effects on broader global security,
stability and sustainability.

The Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction launched for the first time
internationally in Bahrain on 17-18 May will also be launched regionally in Bali, Indonesia.

The event will attended by high government officials from Indonesia and members of ASEAN.
