Diverse Panel Will Advise Superintendent on Ways to Improve Student Access to Healthy,
Locally-grown Food

Wednesday, June 16, 2010—Sacramento, CA—Ubuntu Green, a Sacramento community-

based organization, is pleased to announce that Charles L. Mason, Jr., the Founder and CEO of
Ubuntu Green, has been appointed to the Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD)
Healthy Food Working Group. Mr. Mason, a community advocate based in the Oak Park
neighborhood will join a diverse group of leaders from the school, farming, business and legal
communities, to devise a framework for allowing students to have greater access to nutritious,
locally-grown foods.

Upon his notification that he was selected for the working group, Mr. Mason said, “As a parent
and an active member of the community, I am honored and excited about this opportunity
to ensure that our students get the healthiest and highest-quality foods.” Studies have
shown that students who have healthy diets are more alert and perform better academically. The
working group will meet biweekly to consider creative ways to improve student diets and submit
their findings in 6 months. Mr. Mason went on to say, “It is also important that we source this
food locally and from organic sources, whenever possible.”
