Present Simple

When do we use the present simple?

• To say things that are permanent.


Ex. I teach English (this is my job)

• Sentences that are true facts.


Ex. The sun rises everyday.

• To describe daily situations.


•Ex. I eat my lunch everyday.
How do we form sentences in the Present Simple
tense?
• Affirmative (I, you, we, they): •Affirmative (she, he, it):
Subject+ verb + complement. Subject + verb + (s) – (es) + complement.
Ex. I go to school from Monday to Friday. Ex. She goes to school from Monday to
Friday.

• Negative (I, you, we, they): • Negative (she, he, it):


Subject + don’t + verb + complement Subject + doesn’t + verb + complement
Ex. I don’t go to school on Sunday Ex. she doesn’t play the piano

• Question (I, you, we, they); • Question (she, he, it)


Do + subject + verb +complement ? Does + subject + verb + complement ?
Ex. Do you play tennis? Ex. Does he play tennis?
Yes, I do. Yes, he does.
No, I don’t. No, he doesn’t.
Present Continuous

When do we use the Present Continuous?

• To describe something that is happening now


Ex. I am eating my chocolate (now)

•To say something that is temporally


Ex. I am reading a book (during a week, 3 days, etc)
How do we form sentences in the Present
Continuous tense?
Simple Past

When do we use the Simple Past tense?

We use this tense when we refer to:

• Complete activities in the past.


Ex. I went to the cinema last Friday.

• Activities that can’t change (they are done)


Ex. I committed a crime last year.

• Repeated actions in the past.


Ex. I called him many times yesterday.
How do we form sentences in the Simple Past
tense?
We have two types of verbs Regular and Irregular :

• Regular verbs don’t change and we form them adding a “D” or


an “ED” at the end of the verb.
Ex.1 : Play : played , commit: committed, stay: stayed
Ex.2: I played football yesterday.

• Irregular verbs change their structure:


Ex.3: Find: found, go: went, feel: felt , be: was (I, she, he, it) –
were (we, you, they)
Ex.4: I went to London last year.
Ex.5: She was in her house at 5:00 pm yesterday.
Did I, she, he, it: WAS - you, we they: WERE
Affirmative: Affirmative:
Subject + verb in past+ complement. Subject + was/were + complement
Ex. I killed a cat last year. Ex. I was at home yesterday.
Ex. You lost your wallet yesterday. Ex. We were dancers last year.
Negative: Negative:
Subject + didn’t + verb in present + Subject + wasn’t/weren’t + complement
compl. Ex. She wasn’t at the hospital.
Ex. She didn’t kill a cat last year. Ex. They weren’t at school last night.
Ex. He didn’t loose his wallet yesterday.
Question: Question:
Did + subject + verb in present + compl.? (what, where, why, who, which, how) +
Ex. Did they kill a cat last year? was/were + subject + complement?
Yes, they did. Ex. Was he at the train station yesterday?
No, they didn’t. Yes, he was.
Ex. Did we loose our wallets yesterday? No, he wasn’t.
Yes, we did. Ex. Where were you yesterday?
No, we didn’t. I was at the train station yesterday.
Past Continuous
When do we use the Past Continuous tense?
We use this tense when we want to refer to:

• Incomplete activities in the past that began in the past and are
still going on in the past.
• Activities in progress when something else happened in the
past

Ex.1: She was eating when the phone rang.

Ex.2: They were telling us about the accident, when the police
arrived Past Cont. Past Simple
