Overall Course Structure

Year 12 – AS Mathematics
Three equally weighted units
Core 1 – algebra & functions, coordinate geometry, sequences & series, differentiation,
integration
Core 2 – extending Core 1 plus trigonometry, exponentials & logarithms, applications of
calculus
Statistics 1 – models in probability & statistics, representation & summary of data,
probability, correlation & regression, discrete random variables, discrete distributions, the
Normal distribution

Year 13 – A2 Mathematics
Three equally weighted units
Core 3 – algebra & functions, trigonometry, exponentials & logarithms, differentiation,
numerical methods
Core 4 – algebra & functions, coordinate geometry, sequences & series, differentiation,
integration, vectors
An applications unit….(to be confirmed)….
Possibly Mechanics 1 – mathematical models in mechanics, vectors in mechanics,
kinematics of a particle, dynamics of a particle, statics of a particle, moments

Core 1 – Monday 10th January 2011 (am)
Statistics 1 – Wednesday 18th May 2011 (am)
Core 2 – Monday 23rd May 2011 (pm)

Preparation for Year 12 Mathematics


The enclosed summer preparation homework tasks must be completed. Ensure you read
all instructions carefully. Pay special attention to the instruction to show ALL full working
out. Completed work MUST be brought to your first Mathematics lesson in Year 12
without fail.

Eligibility criteria
To begin studying towards AS Mathematics at Welling it is expected that you will have
achieved Grade A or A* in GCSE Mathematics.
