About the Book

"This book was [ .. ] delivered as a series of weekly lectures in 1921 and 1922, and published later in 19 2. Bailey, even at this point in her career, shows a mature grasp f esoteric issues, and deftly brings in scientific concepts such a radioactivity and the fourth dimension. Unlike some other aut ors of this genre, she invokes leading-edge science when it oves the argument ahead, not to impress the reader with he erudition, orto baffle the audience with irrelevant facts.

She sees the universe as alive at all seal s of existence. While the comparison of an atom to a solar s stem no longer holds true, her vision of how consciousness evo es even in the microscale and macro-scale, and how that is mirrored in the tripartate human being, is a lucid exp nation of an occult world-view expressed by many other th in

About the Author

"Alice Ann Bailey (June 16, 1880 - Oece ber 15, 1949), known as Alice A. Bailey or AAB, was born as Alic laTrobe Bateman, in Manchester, England--at 7:32 AM G I according to Dane Rudhyar. She moved to the United Stat s in 1907, where she spent most of her life as a writer and t acher. She wrote on spiritual, occult, astrological, Theosophi I, Christian and other religious themes.

viII ""t

Her works, written between 1919 and 1949, describe a wi eranging system of esoteric thought covering such topics as ow spirituality relates to the solar system, meditation, heal ng, spiritual psychology, the destiny of nations, and prescripti ns for society in general. She described the majority of her wor as having been telepathically dictated to her by a "Master of he Wisdom," initially referred to only as "the Tibetan," or by he initials "O.K.," later identified as "Ojwhal Khul."

Her writings were influenced by the works of Madame Blavatsky. Though Bailey's writings differ from Theosophy, t ey also have much in common with it. She wrote about religi us themes, including Christianity, though her writings re fundamentally different from many aspects of Christianity nd of other orthodox religions. Her vision of a unified soc ety includes a global "spirit of religion" different from traditi nal religious forms and including the concept of the Age of Aquarius.

Controversy has arisen around some of Bailey's statements on nationalism, American isolationism, Soviet totalitariani m, Fascism, Zionism, Nazism, race relations, people of Afri an descent, the Jewish people, and the religions of Judaism nd Christianity. Yonassan Gershom and others have described er writings as racist and antisemitic.

According to Robert S. Ellwood, her philosophy and her writi gs are still applied by the groups and organizations she founded, such as the Arcane School, the New Group of World Serv rs, and the Full Moon Meditation Groups that follow her te chings."

e Consciousness of the Atom

FOREWORD

HE lectures here presented were delivered in New York during the past winter. The purpose of this series was to present to their auditors the testimony of science as to relation of matter and of consciousness; to enable the earers to observe the identical manifestation ofthese relations nd of certain basic laws in successively higher states of being, nd thus to bring to them a realization of the universality of the volutionary process and its actuality; and to deal somewhat ith the nature of the expanded states of consciousness and he enlarged life toward which all mankind is traveling. They hus were intended to serve as an introduction to the more etailed study and application of the laws of life and human nfoldment generally included in the term of "occultism."

I will be observed that there is in this series a considerable

mount of repetition, as each lecture briefly reviews the atters covered in the preceding addresses. As newcomers ere present at each lecture in the series, it was found ecessary on each occasion to present a bird's eye view of the round covered and the reasons for the position then taken. A

urther advantage was found in the fixing in the minds of the earers of certain of these basic concepts which were new to any of them, and which helped to enable them to grasp and

o receive readily the further expansion of the theme. In

resenting the lectures in book form it has been deemed dvisable to retain the complete text of the lectures as given. hose who are already students of the esoteric wisdom will be ble to follow the line of the argument of the lectures without ifficulty. For those however, who for the first time approach

THE FIELD F EVOLUTION

The Consciousness of the Atom

THERE has probably ne er been a period in the history of thought entirely re embling the present. Thinkers everywhere are consc ous of two things, first, that the region of mystery has never efore been so clearly defined, and secondly, that that region ca be entered more easily than has hitherto been the case; it ma ,therefore, perhaps be ind uced to render up some of its secr ts if investigators of all schools pursue their search with d termination. The problems with which we are faced, as we udy the known facts of life and existence, are susceptible of learer definition than heretofore, and though we do not know the answer to our questions, though we have not as y discovered the solution to our problems, though no panace lies ready to our hand whereby we can remedy the world's lis, yet the very fact that we can define them, that we can poi t in the direction in which mystery lies, and that the light of scie ce, of religion, and of philosophy, has been shed upon vast tra ts which were earlier considered lands of darkness, is a guara tee of success in the future. We know so much more than wa the case five hundred years ago, except in a few circles of ise men and mystics; we have discovered so many laws 0 nature, even though as yet we cannot apply them, and the nowledge of "things as they are" (and I choose these words ve deliberately) has made immense strides.

Nevertheless, the mystery la d still remains to be opened up, and our problems are still n merous. There is the problem of our own particular life, wh tever that may be; there is the problem of that which is la gely termed the "Not-Self", and

which concerns our physical body, our environme t, our circumstances, and our life conditions; if we are of an int os pective turn of mind, there is the problem of our particula set of emotions, and of the thoughts, desires, and instincts b which we control action. Group problems are many; why shoul there be suffering, starvation, and pain? Why should the wo Id as a whole be in the thrall of the direst poverty, of sick ess, of discomfort? What is the purpose underlying all that e see around us, and what will be the outcome of world affairs, viewing them as a whole? What is the destiny of the human race, what is its origin, and what is the key to its resent condition? Is there more than this one life, and is t e sole interest to be found in that which is apparent and m terial? Such queries pass through all our minds at various tim s, and have passed through the minds of thinkers right down hrough the centuries.

There have been many attempts to reply to these qu stions, and as we study them, we find that the answers given II into three main groups, and that three principal solutions a e held out for the conside ration of me n. These th ree solutions a e:-

First, Realism. Another name for this school is that of ism. It teaches that "the presentation which we ave in consciousness of an external world is true"; that things a e what they seem; that matter and force, as we know them, re the only reality, and that it is not possible for man to get bey nd the tangible. He should be satisfied with facts as he knows t em, or as science tells him they are. This is a perfectly Ie itimate method of solution, but for some of us it fails in that it d es not go far enough. In refusing to concern itself with anythin except that which can be proven and demonstrated it stops hart at the very point where the enquirer says, "that is so, but hy?11 It leaves out of its calculation much that is known and rea ised as truth by the average man, even though he may be un ble to

explain why he knows it to be true. Men everywhere are recognising the accuracy of the facts of the realistic school, and of material science, yet at the me time they feel innately that there is, underlying the prove objective manifestation, some vitalising force, and some coh rent purpose which cannot be accounted for in terms of matt r alone.

Secondly, there is the point of iew which we can best, perhaps, call supernaturalism. Man be omes conscious that perhaps, after all, things are not exactly what they seen to be, and that there remains much which is nexplicable; he awakens to the realisation that he himself is not simply an accumulation of physical atoms, a material som hing, and a tangible body, but that latent within him is a cons iousness, a power, and a psychic nature which link him to all other members of the human family, and to a power outside himself which he must perforce explain. This it is which has led, for instance, to the evolution of the Christian and Jewish poi of view, which posits a God outside the solar system, W 0 created it, but was Himself extraneous to it. These system of thought teach that the world has been evolved by a Power r Being Who has built the solar system, and Who guides the orlds aright, keeping our little human life in the hollow of His hand, and "sweetly ordering" all things according to some hi den purpose which it is not possible for us, with our finit minds, to glimpse, still less to understand. This is the religiou and supernatural point of view, and is based on the growing se consciousness of the individual, and in a recognition of his own ivinity. like the point of view of the realistic school, it embodie only a partial truth, and needs to be complemented.

The third line of thought we mi ht call the Idealistic. It posits an evolutionary process within all anifestation, and identifies life with the cosmic process. It is t e exact opposite of materialism,
