COPPER ELECTRODE ARM

CVS DESIGN CONSIDERS 4,5 A/MM2

CURRENT CARRYING CAPACITY OF
COPPER IN ELECTRODE ARMS, EVEN
IT CAN CARRY UP TO 6 A/MM2, TO
GIVE MORE FLEXIBILITY DURING
PRODUCTION
CVS - ELECTRODE ARM
WHY TO CHOOSE

-Can be installed on any AC EAF

-Assuring well balanced symmetric
electric
-Diminishing of interaction of magnetic
fields of different phases
-Main tubular-conductor, made of
copper is advantageously located
coaxially in the tubular cavity of the
electrode arm.
-Since it is totally protected, it is
practically maintenance free.
-Conductors are cooled via main
tubular conductor, thus eliminating
necessity of any seals.
-Magnetic field confining shield is made from magnetic material, with high magnetic
permeability.
-No need for additional loop installed in centre electrode arm or delta closure, or costly
reactors on the primary side of the furnace transformer

CVS DESIGN OBJECTIVE

Main objective of CVS’s electrode arm design is to consider maximum capacity of

transformer power to increase the productivity, because of higher current levels to be
achieved.

Generally, total area is designed higher to have low resistivity yielding lower heat loss.

Arm geometry is considered not to have any magnetic field.

CVS always considers that all

current is passing through Copper
part of the arm even, in reality, one
quarter of the current is passing
through steel.

Electrod is holded in the arm with

spring force and released by
cylinder. All the parts in that area is
covered by special non-conductive
ceramic.
CVS - ELECTRODE ARM
MANUFACTURING

Water-cooled, sturdy boxtype design with

welded internal reinforcements.

CVS’s unique electrode head construction with

spring suspension cuts maintenance
times to the minimum.

20/8 Electrolytic Copper having more than 99

% purity is used since it can carry more
current.

Steel and copper sheets are hot rolled and

contact points are welded with special material
to overcome the resistivity of connection.

CONTACT POINTS

Since, the sharp edges/points create resistivity

resulting heat, all equipments/ parts are
machined to get better contact points. Welding
cuts and all dimensions are carefully controlled to
get better contacts of the equipments.

After all welding and other connections are

completed, all surfaces are machined.

Special attention is given for connection points of

water cooled secondary cables andcontact plate.

ISOLATION

There are 2 point for isolating the arm.

-Between electrode and pense
-In the flexible hose carrying water from arm to
pense
Additionally, contact plate and connection bolts
between arm and electrode column, isolation
materials are used. All hoses on electrode arm
are are made from anti-magnetic materials that
will not conduct electricity.

COOLING WATER CIRCUIT
-Aim: to get maximum cooling effect in the outer
surface of the arm.
-Main purpose: to circulate water first in the bottom
part.
-At the middle of electrode arm, small amount of water
is passed.
-Water circulation: Water enters from arm bottom part
and path as contact plate, pense, upper part of the
arm.
-Cooling water quantity and piping design aims to get
maximum 45 °C at the outlet.

DESIGN ADVANTAGES

-The arm itself fabricated from copper cladded steel.

-The thickness of the copper cladding according to the current density.

-The arm totally water cooled.

-Clamping device with cup springs and hydraulic cylinder inside conductor.

-High force to clamp electrodes, optimising availability and minimum maintenance.

-High regulation speeds with excellent active power input profiles.

-Power distribution equal on all three phases, adapted via secondary bus bar system.

-Low energy losses through utilization of the whole cross section of the arm with the
advantages of copper as a homogeneous conductive material.

-Tailor-made design, construction and commissioning of the electrode arm system to

guarantee a stable operation.
CVS
ELECTRODE COLUMN

THE COLUMNS DEVELOPED BY

CVS OFFER AN EXCELLENT
RESPONSE TO THOSE
EXPECTATIONS, ALLOWING
FOR A LOW-MAINTENANCE,
FRIENDLY, TROUBLE-FREE AND
RELIABLE OPERATION.
CVS - ELECTRODE COLUMN
CVS DESIGN OBJECTIVE

Electrode lifting columns are designed to

resist ultra-high electrodynamic forces.

The columns are exposed to harsh ambient

conditions: heat load, dust, slag and steel
splashes, radiation, electro-magnetic fields,
mechan-ical stresses, vibrations and even
shocks.

Electrode lifting columns is able to perform

their task with little maintenance, and remain
capable of precise positioning.

It is designed to minimize the wear that's

related to the columns and the rollers while
being able to readjust a possible wear gap
quickly and easily.

CVS ADVANTAGES

-Designed for an extended service life

The column's stable construction that features a water-cooled mast stool and well-
protected movement cylinders typically guarantee more than five years' operation under
extremely harsh conditions.

-Reduced maintenance costs

The columns are extremely low-wear. Wear gaps, if any, may be easily and quickly
readjusted. Roller bearings can be exchanged easily thus limiting downtimes.

-Shorter tap-to-tap time

The possibility of a higher electrical power input allows the melting cycle to be speed up
by as much as 15%.

-Improved productivity
Thanks to a faster positioning speed of up to 50%, the power off time can be reduced by
up to 10%.

-It's possible to achieve an overall up to 12-15 % increase in productivity.

CVS - ELECTRODE COLUMN
EASY MAINTENANCE

Our unique design allows for the use of only 8

rollers per mast instead of 12 rollers, thus
offering the possibility of a significant reduction
in cost-intensive wear and time-consuming
mainte-nance for alignment.

The positioning of the columns outside the

gantry bearing ring, makes the guide rollers
easily accessible.
