Assessment Purpose – obtain baseline • Students will use a KWL form
understanding of what students to list what they know about “What do we know about know about writing process feature articles based on their feature articles?” and qualities of good writing in prior knowledge. non-narrative writing and use this knowledge to shape the work of the unit
Choosing a Topic/s • Carefully selected feature • Students will be writing about
articles self-chosen subjects of personal expertise. • Students may write feature articles on many topics. • Or students may write about one topic from different angles.
Developing Proficiency in Sources of information: • Writers first learn to gather
• Encyclopedias and dictionaries information from a variety of Non-Narrative Writing • Feature articles sources. • Internet sites • Writers organize what they have to say into clear and structured sub-categories. • Writers talk back to the facts they collect so that their writing is a tapestry of information and reflection. • Some writers write with an angle. (the subject and, also, the lens)

• Feature article selections reading aloud selections of Workshop on Nonfiction nonfiction text and Reading information articles. (Reading as a Writer) • Writers are immersed in the genre in Independent Reading.
