Asking the Age


Correct: How old are you? I am 15 years old. / I am 15.
Incorrect: How many years do you have? I have 15.

LIKE
Correct: I like chocolate. (like here is a verb)
Correct: He is like my brother they both study very hard. (Here like is not a verb and I'm not
saying that "He likes my brother", but that they are similar to each other in some
aspects.)

like (SIMILAR TO) preposition, conjunction


similar to; in the same way or manner as
I've got a sweater just like yours.
Stop acting like a jerk!

GROW UP / GROW
grow up v prep
to change from being a child to being an adult
Correct: She grew up on a Pennsylvania farm.
Because of this example, students often use grow up when we should use only grow.
grow (INCREASE) verb
to increase in size or amount, or to allow or encourage (something) to increase in size or to become
more advanced or developed
Correct: The population is growing rapidly.
Correct: The economy is expected to grow by 2% next year.
Incorrect: The economy is expected to grow up by 2% next year.
