COMPENSATION FOR LONG BEACH MAYOR AND CITY

COUNCILMEMBERS
AUGUST 12, 2010

• Council members for the City of Long Beach receive $31,902 in

salary for their duties as Councilmembers. The Mayor receives
$127,602. A voter-approved amendment to the City Charter in 1986
set the salaries and stipulates that Councilmembers receive one-
fourth of the Mayor’s salary.

• The Mayor and City Councilmembers are eligible for either a City
vehicle to be utilized for City business, or an auto allowance of $450
per month to utilize their personal vehicle for City business.

• The Mayor and City Councilmembers are eligible for a cell phone
allowance of $80 per month to have a phone for city business. Some
Councilmembers elect to take a cell phone allowance, while others do
not.

• City Councilmembers receive $50 per meeting for their separate

duties as the City of Long Beach Housing Authority. This board
meets once a month. This is the only internal City board that
provides any compensation to City Councilmembers. There is no
compensation for City Councilmembers for any other City of Long
Beach board such as a Parking Authority, Joint Powers Authority,
Surplus Property Authority, Redevelopment Agency, Board of
Appeals or any other internal City board.

• Specific City Councilmembers represent the City on outside boards,

some of which provide a stipend for meetings attended. Most of
these boards meet quarterly or monthly. Only Councilmembers that
are independently elected by other regional elected officials or
appointed by the Mayor and are in attendance at required meetings
receive this stipend – it is not a benefit that each City Councilmember
receives automatically. Only one or two Councilmembers are
appointed to these boards at a time. These stipends are paid by the
outside agency providing the stipend and are not compensation from
the City of Long Beach.
