 Brief History
• First held in 1930 under the title of British
Empire Games in Hamilton, Ontario,
Canada.
• Renamed as the British Empire and
Commonwealth Games in 1954, the British
Commonwealth Games in 1970, and gained
its current title in 1978.
Common Wealth Games 2010
• Currently 54 members of the
Commonwealth of Nations, and 71 teams
participate in the Games.
• The 19th CWG will be held from October 3rd
to October 14th in New Delhi.
• Total budget estimated is USD 1.6 Billion.

• India is expecting about two million tourists
in New Delhi for the Games, as well as about
10,000 athletes.
• Prasar Bharati is the host broadcast partner
for Delhi 2010.

 Progress Report
• Out of the 34 major projects undertaken by Delhi government to
enhance the city's infrastructure, 15 are yet to be completed.

• Some of them are:- road linking the Games Village and Jawaharlal
Nehru stadium, Delhi Transport Corporation's park and ride facility for
buses near Rajghat, install new streetlights along 410km of roads,
Rs334 crore project to improve the UP Link road, according to officials,
may not be completed at all ahead of the mega sporting event, Rs260
crore project to resurface arterial roads, renovation of Connaught
Place, the city's central heritage market plaza.

 
• Pullouts of crowd-pullers such as sprint stars Usain Bolt and Asafa
Powell, swimming sensation Stephanie Rice and tennis players Lleyton
Hewitt and Samantha Stosur.
 India in CWG 2010
• Top shooters may miss the Commonwealth
Games as the National Rifle Association of
India (NRAI) is not going to take past records
and world rankings into consideration.
• Indian hockey team may lose its chance to
participate in the Commonwealth Games as
the team was not yet selected.
• There was a fear that the Tennis team might
pull out. Issue is now resolved.
 The CWG 2010 Scam:
• The Games in India have been marred by financial
irregularities exposing a large corruption scam.
• Indian Central Vigilance committee has warned of
sub standard construction that have not met safety
requirements. It is yet to be seen whether the
venues will be ready.
• The ED investigation is now focused on trailing the
ultimate beneficiaries of the payments made to four
major CWG consultants - Event Knowledge Services,
Fast Track Sales Ltd, Sports Marketing And
Management (SMAM) and AM Films.
 The CWG 2010 Scam: (Contd.)
• Joint Director General of the Commonwealth
Games' Organising Committee T S Darbari and
the head of the committee's finance and
accounts wing M Jeychandran were suspended.
• SMAM were promised commissions between 15
and 22.5 per cent for all sponsorship regardless
of the fact whether SMAM actually brought in
the sponsorships or not.
• The defence ministry, has been asked to provide
military personnel and facilities free of cost for
the Games.
 Future Effects
• Big events like Commonwealth Games impact
prices of basic commodities like land, rent and
transportation, raising the average cost of living.
• Within the next 25 to 30 years of the 2010
Games each resident of the city will have to pay a
debt in form of increased prices of land, basic
commodities, petrol.
• National capital can't afford to host any more
mega sporting events. There is a 'danger' of Asian
Games 2019 and Olympics being organised in the
city.
