The 2010 Commonwealth Games will be the nineteenth Commonwealth Games, and the ninth to be held under that

name. The Games are scheduled to be held in New Delhi, India between 3 October and 14 October 2010. The games will be the largest multi-sport event conducted to date in Delhi and India, which has previously hosted the Asian Games in 1951 and 1982. The opening ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the main stadium, in Delhi. It will also be the first time the Commonwealth Games is held in India and the second time the event has been held in Asia (after 1998 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia). Getting the opportunity to host a mega sporting event like the Commonwealth Games is a symbol of pride for any country as it speaks about its development status. Consequently, hosting sporting events is a much sort after opportunity and nations around the world use all that they can to seize it. The Games bring funds for the host country, which can well be used for developing infrastructure facilities, both sporting and urban. Delhi will be offering innumerable amenities to all the athletes in October 2010. Free accommodation for all athletes, a modern-comfortable Games Village, cutting-edge health facilities, security, pollution-free environment, entertainment for non-competition times, transportation, etc. In addition to all the preparation, the cab driver, waiters, gatemen, and service staff of Delhi are being taught the English language. This is due to the rush of English-speaking tourists. From last two years, the city has successfully taught 2,000 drivers in English and thus continuing the program to reach as many people as possible before the Games. The city is planning to teach English to about 1,000 people per month. The Government of India is also planning to expand the program to teach people in all dominant tourist destinations. These places include Agra and Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, Bhopal and Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, Gaya in Bihar and Puri in Orissa. To relocate migrant beggars from Delhi streets, Delhi High Court is also set to implement a series of "mobile courts" all through Delhi. The power shortage is something that seems to be addressed effectively by the Delhi government. It expects to provide Delhi around 7000MW by 2010, up from the current 4000 MW. In the next couple of years, the city will get power from the Damodar Valley Corp, National Thermal Power Corp, the Dadri power plant and the Jhajhar plant.

There are basically two kinds of benefits, which India will receive by hosting CWG: Short term Benefits (fresh cash flows from the visitors that will come to link the host country, officials, athletes, education, media, and cultural events at the International event) Long term Benefits (creation of Infrastructure, international attention and Job creation and social cohesion) The preparations for the games received criticism in news media due to issues including: bad weather, infrastructural compromise, preparation delays (in particular, that of the Games Village), the withdrawal of prominent athletes, and allegations of widespread corruption. However no nations have withdrawn and the games have not been postponed. Corruption has already marred the Games spirit and crumbling infrastructure which breaks down as it is being laid down has already kept many from the sporting fraternity as well as tourists away. And the Rain Gods have almost decided to punish the authorities for the delayed preparations and the reported corruption in the system WHEN THE Chakra inspired logo of the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010, Delhi, was unveiled a 1000 days before, on January 6, 2008, no one had any idea that the spiral depicting the growth of India into a proud and vibrant nation might turn to be a spiral of our ineptitude. The Commonwealth will be more than just another sports event. It promises to leverage Indias stock in the world. Pragmatically, it will reaffirm that India can be a potential challenger to China. As India prepares to wing gold in every medal possibly available, it ignores the large scale eviction and environmental loss necessitated by the construction. Funds are also being diverted from more important needs to get the work done fast. A Commonwealth Games factsheet announced that Delhi will invest Rs.26,000 crores on infrastructure and another Rs.7,000 crores on stadiums and roads. In any case, Delhi

will be regenerated from what it was five years ago. The tourism ministry claimed that it has already finished 30,000 rooms and will finish another 40,000 before the games begin. Its another matter that 13 of the 19 venues arent going to complete on schedule and more than four lakhs people have been evicted, almost forcefully, since 2004. This manner of welfare development model, would again be development for some and not for others. If we had to develop like this only, we should have better done all this five years ago. The income generated from these events will be less than, what would be put into these events and would be temporary too. There is no planning of what will be done with the hospitality industry, after the games completes. CWG 2010 is facing some hurdles, which can washout all the preparation done by our Government for Commonwealth Games 2010. the construction of Metro train has changes our means of commutation, despite of Bus we prefer to go by Metro train which is faster than anything else and easily accessible. We need not to wait so long for the arrival as we do for Bus. But on contrary the construction has made the traffic to move like snake. every where construction, a single mistake while construction leads a major accident. We have heard this kind of news every month. General roads are blocked, new roads takes long time to reach destination places. Blue buses are replaced by new TATA Starbuses, which runs on CNG, its pollution free. But, due to ignorance in the maintenance of these CNG bus leads to fire accident. In a single month of December we have heard more than 5 such cases of Bus on Fire. And now 30,000 additional rooms are needed for CWG 2010. The Government admitted that only 10,000 rooms were available in Delhi for Commonwealth games scheduled for 2010 against a requirement of 40,000 rooms for foreign tourist and domestic visitors. Our Tourist minister said that work is on the track for the provision of additional 30,000 rooms. she also stated that arrangements were being made to facilitate the visitors. Metro rail connectivity was being expanded and more buses were being upgraded in Delhi and surrounding states. The money spent on all this expenditure if would have used for the India, then its development would have reached upto a higher level. For concluding, I would like to say, the hosting the CWG 2010 has both positive and negative points.
