Course Description
Fundamentals of Art (FOA) will introduce students to various media, including
design, drawing, painting and crafts. This course will also provide students with a
framework of skills, the language of art, and an introduction of art history. The
class fee is $10.00.

Course Objectives
By the end of this course students in FOA should be able to:
- Demonstrate the ability to perceive, interpret, and respond to ideas,
experiences, and the environment through visual art.
- Understand the visual arts as a basic aspect of history and human
experience.
- Organized knowledge and ideas for expression in the production of art.
- Identify, analyze, and apply criteria for making visual aesthetic judgments.
- Understand the necessity of meeting deadlines.
- Maintain a portfolio that will archive students work as well as document
progress.
- Follow art room expectations.

Possible Units:
All unit specifics will be detailed at the beginning of each unit.
I. Drawing
A. Line
Students will engage in a series of activities designed to improve their
observational skills as they focus on the use of line and the impact of the
artist’s viewpoint.
B. Value
Students will develop an understanding of value and how it is used to
represent 3-dimensional objects on a flat surface.

II. Color
Students will be introduced to the color wheel and learn relationships
between colors and how color can be used expressively in drawing and painting.

III. Design
Students will explore the principles of design by designing a symbolic
circular design called a mandala.

IV. Crafts
Students will create a work of art using materials in a creative way,
emphasizing visual flow and media to enhance the design.
