By expanding their knowledge to include Art Nouveau, they expand their personal capacity for creativity. Name: Jessica Perri Grade Level: 9-12

Unit Summary: Some of the smaller art movements in history are overlooked by school textbooks, but they are no less important than the others. Each movement has its own significance, its own ideas, and its own inspiring artists. Art Nouveau is one such movement. But it is so unique and distinguished, it deserves student attention. Using this unit to study its features helps students to analyze art with new ideas. It also serves to refine the way they create their own artwork. Art Nouveau meant the beginnings of graphic design, using big bold colors and shapes. While beginning artists have a tendency to focus on details, this unit eases them out of that dangerous habit. A significant portion of the unit is dedicated to learning about where and when Art Nouveau came about. The unit is designed to solidify important information through repetition. Students will internalize the major artists, the time period, and, most of all, the characteristics of the style so that they are able to recall these things whenever needed. Moreover, students see the practicality of Art Nouveau and how it affected the objects we use every day. Assessment Plan: Entry-Level: Quick Write/Draw Formative: Exit Ticket Quiz 5 Thumbnail Drawings Lesson 1 Student Learning Objective: Know the distinguishing features of Art Nouveau Acceptable Evidence: Students can recall, from memory, the fundamental qualities of Art Nouveau artwork. Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization Interaction
Lesson Activities:

Summative: Art Nouveau Illustration

Quick Write/Draw- A worksheet will be handed out at the beginning of class that contains a side for writing and a blank side for quick sketches. Students will be asked to display their knowledge of art history by recording a few art movements (at least one to two), and by quickly sketching a painting or a style from one of the art movements that they recall. This will refresh their art history memories, show how much they know, and put them in the midset for digesting more history. PowerPoint: Following the quick write is a lecture accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation. The powerpoint is a basic introduction to Art Nouveau. It covers the characteristics of the movement and also shows them in application by considering various artists. Some slides are meant to prepare students for learning about the historical context, which will be further developed in the upcoming lesson. Guided Notes: Students follow along with the powerpoint using their guided notes. At certain points during the lecture, time will be allotted for

completing these questions. Class discussion will be encouraged. Questions that are opinion based will especially serve as the basis for conversation. The instructor will begin desired discussions by first giving her contribution. These guided notes will be turned in for credit. Exit Ticket- After the Powerpoint lecture, students will be required to answer one review question taken from the lecture in order to receive credit for the day. Answering correctly will demonstrate that students listened and understood to the presentation. The question may involve -An artist's name -A trait of the Art Movement -A historical fact Lesson 2 Student Learning Objective: Understand Art Nouveau in terms of its place in history and the artists who inspired the movement Acceptable Evidence: Students are able to state their feelings about Art Nouveau with a critical eye, using knowledge of related art movements as well as works created by those within Art Nouveau. Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization Interaction
Lesson Activities:

Webercise: Students will use designated websites to go deeper into the history of Art Nouveau. They will also gain more insight on the artists that made it. The questions will not only cover facts, but allow students to express their opinion on what theyre learning. They will have an opportunity to use their critical thinking skills either to praise Art Nouveau or deride it. At this time, they will need to call upon knowledge gained as well as their critical thinking skills. Quiz- After completing the guided activities, students will take a short, multiple choice quiz that covers important information from what students have been learning

Lesson 3 Student Learning Objective: Create an original artwork that reflects their understanding of the Art Nouveau Movement Acceptable Evidence: Students create their own artwork in the style of Art Nouveau Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization Interaction
Lesson Activities:

Research: Because the upcoming project requires a lot of knowledge the students likely will not have in their mental library, students must do some research through internet search tools. They will be focusing on a single month of the year. Using this month as a starting point, students must find related objects that they can use in their illustration. These objects should be reminiscent and related to the month they choose. Color Schemes and Motifs: Before creating the final project, students will approach and plan for the project one step at a time. In the Color Scheme/Motif worksheet, students explore three variations of Art Nouveau color schemes. One of these color schemes will appear in their final piece. They also must design several different naturalistic motifs. As the name suggests, such motifs will be used repeatedly throughout their Art Nouveau

illustration, an allusion to the Nouveau method of using rhythm, harmony, and nature. 3 Thumbnail Drawings- In preparation for your Art Nouveau illustration, students are to draw out five possible ideas. They will contain a minimum of three Art Nouveau elements, have pleasing compositions, and show creative thought. Art Nouveau Illustration: Students will create an original illustration that applies all of the gained knowledge throughout the unit and applies new skills. Unit Resources:
