Even III the comparatively lean .1970s Bob Latchford's goal scoriag record for the Blues had II i m knocking at the door ,of imlhorlillity too, The bare rrurh is that fur many Evcrtoruans, these Iour are no less than all-tlme greats and, as a resu ~I, many see Du ncan as the latest in along line of u~at·'em centre forwards prepared to spi [I blood fur the Gause and to' go down ill history for doing it Th is impression has been created by some ,onnc thiDl~ big Dune .has d.ope since arriving Everton had won one geme ""hC"DI Ll verpool ... For fans of tile club at whneh Dixie Dean scored goals lib this for years • .i! was like tlae second coming - despit,c what you might bear from those red noses who claim he was aiming for Neil Ruddock but that the ball just happened to meet II is head first.

Further goals liketllis against learns like Leeds and Man United, against whom the Blues ha ve really struggled in recent seasons, only served to strengthen his reputation - !lot least when, after ~corlng against tile Manes (another header [rom 8 comer, of COUTW) he proceeded to eclebraie by removing his top a:ndl sWIllging it above h [8 he-ad i ill a frenz.iod di splay of tril.ll'llphalism.

Nonetheless.. Ihe sense of j J! justice served a~so to cement the bond between player and fan.

Royle Ccnnectien S Thenjhern was the race to get .h:im fit in time for the Cup Finnl. A Demma problem was diagnosed abolll six weeks before WemoJey anti, although he only aCWOllIly scored one of the twelve goals in the Blues' Clip run,lhe lceal press became obsessed with the question of his fUIlesS - an obsession only strengthened by Joe Royle'S references to his being indlspenseble (a claim whlch the Semi-FinaI had already proved - and \'Ihlch tbe Final itself re-lterared - was a load of baloney).

History Shows he ended up JS a sub Who caaie on and made on'~y onesigaificant contrl buti on- cl~lte:ring imo Peter S,c.tl'meicilel. a man whose amazing arrogance ensured. that Evertonians were: as gratcfalto the big man as they wou~d have been for any go",1 he'd actually rnimllged to score.

On. top of all this, lhe pjgeon fancyililg. stuff lind his propensity for a woe drink seem to have re-inforced thc "one-of-us" idea ofl1illt that many misty-eyed Blues farns have.

ArfirSl ilmight seem unusual for a book about the 1994 World Cup finals to appear a year after the event, wigen the excitement, the drama and (he g~ab ha ve all but furled from the memory. But Ed Horton is the l~.test warrior 10 sally forth to do battle w irh tho forces of darkness currently assai Ii 'lg the game, IIlld 1I1e USA World Cup uS merely the anvil on which his critical sword has been hammered UFilto shape. The very fact

The 1994 World Cup was subverted and subordinated to the requirements o.f people wi th noO' i nte rest in football.

As might IDe guessed from the slyly sarcasrlc title of the book. Ed is far from being an <lposUe ofthe' free market' and frc:qllenUY refers to himself as <!lleny'. The blatant and insidlous shift in emphasis whieh has made businessman the siar players in the game of footil<ill is one of the principal demons witll \vhich Ed HOi1Oll wrestles, IHhe book has a central m~sgage ~llS probably contained in the p.assag,e which reads, "7 here are umok: s~lms Qf !llorwy wailing 10 be mode f~()m fOQtball, Supp.()rM·g P~{ the money there. Selling The Game [Down the River) At the beginning or tile hook Ed points out ohm it is a TV watchers account of'the

For ressons of cirt:umstaI1Ge, malnly econom ic, he, like most of us, could only consume the ~994 World Cup via tile carhedc ray tube, That fact leads him on naturallv 10 consider tile role wh i ell tdeiVisio,tl !lOW plays in the game, As television is the most powerful medium, it has an !lImoS!: unfLllite capacity to control and regulate people's perception of the world Which us why television ad\'elltisillg us so potent, That potency is used by commercial interests. to sell their wares.

MUI'doch understands this trite concept readily ,enoug11. When it comes tu c1<plo.iting foorball's elemental popularity the Sky is literally the limit. Ed thus observesthat modem televised football is in reality merely a link between advert breaks. He s!lys [hillt il~ actual purpose is net to promote football, but to sell consumer goods,
