Hydrological

Cycle
Existence and movement of water on, in, and above the Earth.
•What is water cycle?
•Where does all the Earth’s water come from?
Components of water cycle
• Water storage in oceans
• Evaporation
• Sublimation
• Evapotranspiration
• Water in the atmosphere
• Condensation
• Precipitation
• Water storage in ice and snow
• Snowmelt runoff to streams
• Surface runoff
• Stream flow
• Freshwater Storage
• Infiltration
• Ground-water Storage
• Ground-water Discharge
• Springs
Importance of Hydrological cycle
•The water cycle is very important, as water is very
important to us.
•Approximately three-fourths of the Earth is covered with
water--salt water.
•Of this water, approximately one percent is the fresh
water on which we depend.
•The fresh water that we use and its continuous
replacement is a result of the water cycle.
Problems

• Depleting fresh water resources

• Groundwater – years to recharge naturally
• Contaminated surface water
• Global warming
• Misuse
