What education issue is on your radar, and why?

Quality of Education because it directly impacts Student Performance.

What do you hope to change about the education system?

1. Less rhetoric, more reality.
2. Greater emphasis on exploring knowledge and resource sharing opportunities
between school boards, public & private enterprise, and education communities
worldwide.
3. Increased attention to identifying, and implementing successful teaching
methods, and technology/hardware & software available to assist educators,
students and parents.

Why do you want to be a school board trustee?

My reason for wanting to be a school board trustee is first based on my desire to

serve on, and guide the TVDSB towards placing more value on parental input no
matter the issue, and recognizing the value of drawing from the knowledge
principals, teachers, and other learning support professionals in our schools gain on
a daily basis.

My desire to be a school board trustee is also based on giving voters a choice to

vote for a candidate who they can be confident will be an effective and dedicated
trustee representing students, parents, caregivers, and members of our school
community at large.

What education issue is on your radar, and why?

(1) The question that occurs often in conversations is why are there so many young
adults that disliked high school. It goes without saying that learning and disliking
school are not a good combination for student achievement. Any drop out rate is
unaccepable both because of its impact on the individual student and the impact on
our community. The goal should always be 100%.
(2) Trustees are elected by the community as part of the democratic process. There
is underway an erosion of the direct responsibility to electors such that trustees are
in danger of becoming pseudo-bureaucrates accountable to Queens Park.

What do you hope to change about the education system?

The scores for our school board of the provincial standards testing in reading,
writing and math for the last school year (2009/2010) remained below the
provincial average. Trustees, as the board, have a legal responsibility for "student
achievement" as mandated by the Ontario government. Standardized testing in
Grades 3, 6 and 9 is one component of student achievement. However, the most
accurate measure of student achievement in education is after they have left school
and whether as adults they are contributing members of the community. Let us ask
students as they leave school, whether on graduation or otherwise, what worked or
what could have worked better. This type of "Exit Survey" is commonly used in
the working world and would provide information crucial in planning for student
achievement for those following in younger grades.

Why do you want to be a school board trustee?

I want to serve my community. Everyone in the community has a stake in
education whether or not we have children. Schools are the single most important
institutions for the future of our communities. The knowledge and skills our
children learn today will have a tremendous impact on the health and prosperity of
the community when they are adults. How equipped they are to deal with the
complex issues that they will be faced with will be based in large part on the
foundation acquired in school from K to 12.

There is I see a window of opportunity for newly elected trustees in their initial
term to challenge assumptions. I intend to engage students, educators, parents,
administrators and the greater community in asking questions and seeking
solutions.
