2 Honors

Conditional: If hypothesis, then conclusion.

Ex) If 2 lines are ⊥ , then they form right ∠ ’s. True

If 2 ∠ ’s are ≅ , then they are vertical ∠ ’s. False

Negation: A statement is either True or False. The negation of a statement is

formed by adding the word “not”, or changing = to ≠ , etc.
Can NOT have
Ex) All segments have exactly one midpoint. True the same truth
All segments do not have exactly one midpoint. False values!

1) Write the negation of each statement and give the truth values:
a) Vertical ∠ ’s are ≅ .
b) 2 + 5 = 6
c) Acute ∠ ’s measure less than 90.

Conditionals may be written in different forms:

If p, then q if x = 36 , then x =6

p implies q x = 36 implies x =6

p only if q x = 36 only if x =6

q if p x =6 if x = 36

2) Write the following conditionals in if-then form:

a) Angles measuring more than 90 are obtuse.
b) All right angles are ≅ .
c) A midpoint divides a segment into 2, ≅ segments.

3) Underline the hypothesis once and the conditional twice.

a) If cows moo, then pigs oink.

b) 2a = 6 implies a=3.

c) I’ll learn geometry if Mrs. J makes me.

4) Find the truth values. If false, give a counterexample.

a) If an ∠ is a right ∠ , then it measures 90.

b) If an ∠ measures 90, then it is a right ∠ .

c) If an ∠ measures 30, then it is acute.

d) If an ∠ is acute, then it measures 30.

General Rules: MEMORIZE!

Conditional: if p, then q
Converse: if q, then p same truth values
Inverse: if ~p, then ~q
Contrapositive: if ~q, then ~p
Biconditional: p iff q

☺ Biconditional is true iff everything is true!

5) If necessary, write each conditional in if-then form. Then give the converse,
inverse, contrapositive and biconditional. List all truth values.

a) ∠ A is acute only if m∠ A ≠ 100.

b) ∠ ’s are ≅ if they are right ∠ ’s.

6) Write the biconditional as 2 conditionals that are converses of each other.

a) Points are collinear iff they all lie on the same line.

7) Solve each system of equations using substitution.

a) y = 3x b) y = 3x + 8 c) x – 7y = 13
5x + y = 24 x = y 3x – 5y = 23
