Comparing Cells

Cell Membrane

Observations of appearance & behavior:

The epithelial cell appears blue when dyed. It is a semi-transparent glob, like a drop of water.
Inside the cell are tiny dark dots. The cell shows no behavior and does not move.

Smaller bacterial cells surround the epithelial cell. These cells are darkly stained and are very
small in comparison to the epithelial cell.

Q. Compare basic elements of size and internal structure for

both eubacteria and a general animal cell.

A. Compared to a general animal cell, eubacteria are small

in size. They contain fewer and less complex internal cell
structures.
Elodea Cells

Cell Wall Chloroplasts

Cell Membrane

Observations of appearance & behavior:

The elodea cells are green in color and slightly transparent. They are tightly packed together
and each cell is rectangular in shape with rounded corners. There is a darker border to each cell
(the cell wall), and each cell contains many small, green, and round chloroplasts.

The elodea cells do no exhibit any behavior.

Q. Explain in detail the role of the structures in plant cells that are
lacking in animal cells.
A. Compared to a general animal cell, eubacteria are small in
size. They contain fewer and less complex internal cell
structures.
Q. What is the role of the central vacuole? Is there evidence of it
in the elodea cell image?
A. Compared to a general animal cell, eubacteria are small in
size. They contain fewer and less complex internal cell
structures.
Spirogyra Cells

Cytoplasm Chloroplast

Cell Wall
› Cell walls help the plant cell in retaining water and
help the cell keep its shape. Cholorplasts play a role
in photosynthesis.

› The central vacuole… We do not see evidence of a

central vacuole in these cells because…

Observations of appearance & behavior:

Spirogyra cells are, like elodea cells, rectangular in shape and green in color. The individual cells
are linked in a line, unlike the sheet structure of elodea. Within each cell are several bright
green chloroplasts, dispersed among green cytoplasm.

The spirogyra cells display no behavior.

Amoeba

Cell Membrane

Organelles

Cytoplasm

Observations of appearance & behavior:

The amoeba is mostly transparent with tiny colored dots scattered all throughout the clear
cytoplasm. Its shape changes as it moves, but it generally is very rounded with flows extended
out in different directions.

The amoeba moves around in a flowing motion and envelopes smaller cells as prey. These cells
are consumed, and some can still be seen within the amoeba.

structures.
Paramecium

Food Vacuole Cytoplasm

Cell Membrane

Oral Groove

Cilia

Observations of appearance & behavior:

Paramecium have an elongated oval shape that is more pointed at one end than the other. It is
surrounded by many thin hair-like cilia that wave back and forth in order to generate
movement. Within the paramecium is a groove for taking in food and several other internal cell
structure.

Paramecium move very quickly and seek out food, which is stored in circular food vacuoles.

Mammal Structure/Function
Stomach

INTERIOR EXTERIOR

Observations of appearance:
The interior of the stomach appears slimy and has several lumpy folds. It is fleshy in color.

The stomach’s exterior is…

Heart

Right Ventricle Wall

Left Ventricle Wall

Heart cont.

Q. Compare basic elements of size and internal structure for

both eubacteria and a general animal cell.

A. The left ventricluar wall is thicker than the right

ventricular wall because blood from the left ventricle needs
to be pumped throughout the entire body while blood in the
right ventricle is only pumped to the lungs, which are
relatively close to the heart..
