Present and Past Simple
Present and Past Simple
WHAT?
WHEN?
Present Simple describes (a) facts (fets) and routines, permanent things in the present, (b) future when you
speak about the calendar (e.g. Easter starts on Saturday the 8th of April)
HOW?
In questions, the auxiliary do (does for 3rd person singular, and do for all the others) + verb in infinitive
In affirmatives, only the verb in present simple (with final s in 3rd person singular, and like the infinitive
for all the others)
In negatives, the auxiliary do in negative (doesn’t for 3rd person singular, and don’t for all the others) +
verb in infinitive
PAST SIMPLE
WHAT?
WHEN?
Past Simple describes finished past things; maybe these things finished two years ago or only two minutes
ago. Maybe these things continued for a long time in the past. For example: Yesterday, I went to Marta’s
house and we talked until two o’clock in the morning.
HOW?
In questions, the auxiliary did (in all cases) + verb in infinitive
In affirmatives, only the verb in past simple (with NO final s in 3rd person singular)
In negatives, the auxiliary did in negative (didn’t) (in all cases)
