PRESENT SIMPLE

WHAT?

Where do you live? I live in Masnou. I don’t live in Badalona.


What does he play? He plays the drums. He doesn’t play the guitar.
How do they travel? They travel by train. They don’t travel by plane.

WHEN?
Present Simple describes (a) facts (fets) and routines, permanent things in the present, (b) future when you
speak about the calendar (e.g. Easter starts on Saturday the 8th of April)

HOW?
In questions, the auxiliary do (does for 3rd person singular, and do for all the others) + verb in infinitive
In affirmatives, only the verb in present simple (with final s in 3rd person singular, and like the infinitive
for all the others)
In negatives, the auxiliary do in negative (doesn’t for 3rd person singular, and don’t for all the others) +
verb in infinitive

PAST SIMPLE
WHAT?

Where did you live? I lived in Masnou. I didn’t live in Badalona.


What did he play? He played the drums. He didn’t play the guitar.
How did they travel? They traveled by train. They didn’t travel by plane.

WHEN?
Past Simple describes finished past things; maybe these things finished two years ago or only two minutes
ago. Maybe these things continued for a long time in the past. For example: Yesterday, I went to Marta’s
house and we talked until two o’clock in the morning.

HOW?
In questions, the auxiliary did (in all cases) + verb in infinitive
In affirmatives, only the verb in past simple (with NO final s in 3rd person singular)
In negatives, the auxiliary did in negative (didn’t) (in all cases)
