113th Anniversary of Dr. Jose P. Rizal’s

martyrdom
December 29, 2009, 3:49pm

Dr. Jose P. Rizal was executed by Spanish colonial authorities on December

30, 1896. His martyrdom was first observed on December 30, 1898, by virtue
of a decree issued by President Emilio F. Aguinaldo on December 20, 1898,
directing all local, provincial and government officials to celebrate December
30 as Memorial Day in honor of Dr. Jose P. Rizal and the many other Filipinos
who suffered martyrdom for the sake of Philipine freedom.

The El Heraldo de la Revolucion, official newspaper of the Filipino republic,

published a special issue on December 29, 1898, on Dr. Rizal. In this issue
was first published the poem composed by poet laureate Don Cecilio Apostol
entitled “Al Heroe Nacional” (To the National Hero). This poem showed that
the Filipino people, years before the Americans occupied the Philippines,
already looked up to Dr. Rizal as their National Hero.

Dr. Rizal was shot at 7:03 in the morning of December 30, 1896. His mortal
remains were immediately buried outside the Paco Cemetery on the very
spot where the martyred Father Jose Burgos was buried 24 years earlier.
News about Dr. Rizal's execution caused profound sadness in Europe and the
Americas. Dr. Ferdinand Blumentritt, a close friend of Dr. Rizal, lamented the
latter’s death. “Rizal’s execution,” he said, “is an act inimical to the Spanish
dominion.” “The death of Rizal,” the newspaper La Patria declared, “gave life
to his country; and the life of his country is the death of its persecutors.”

Today we mark the 113th Anniversary of Dr. Jose P. Rizal’s martyrdom.

“Kabayanihan ni Rizal: Daluyan ng Kagitingan at Pagkakaisa” (Dr. Rizal’s
Heroism: Fountain of Valor and National Unity) is this year’s theme.

“A race that has produced a Rizal,” declared University of the Philippines

President Salvador P. Lopez, “is destined to greatness.” The Filipino race
produced Dr. Jose P. Rizal. Every Filipino has a potential for greatness like Dr.
Rizal. Bacause there is a hero in every Filipino awaiting to be unleashed.
