Geometrical Drawing Engineering Curves-I

Sheet 2

1. Construct an ellipse when the distance between the focus and the directrix is
30 mm and the eccentricity is ¾. Draw the tangent and normal at any point P
on the curve using directrix.

2. The major axis of an ellipse is 100 mm and the minor axis is 55 mm. Find the
foci and construct the ellipse by intersecting arc method. Draw also a pair of
tangents from a point P outside ellipse.

3. Construct an ellipse when its major axis is 90 mm and minor axis is 55 mm by

concentric circle method. Draw also a pair of tangents from a point P outside
ellipse.

4. A plot of ground is in the shape of a rectangle 110 m x 50 m. Inscribe an

elliptical lawn in it. Take a scale of 1:1000. Use oblong method.

5. Construct an ellipse when a pair of conjugate diameters AB and CD are equal

to 110 mm and 50 mm respectively. The angle between the conjugate
diameters is 70º.

6. Construct a parabola when the distance between focus and the directrix is 40
mm. Draw tangent and normal at any point P on the curve.

7. A body projected with an initial velocity of 20 m/s, travels a horizontal

distance of 100 m and reaches a maximum height of 30 m. Draw the path of
the body assuming it to be parabolic.

8. Draw a parabola of base 90 mm and axis 60 mm using tangent method. Also

draw a tangent and normal at any point on the curve.

9. Construct a parabola within a parallelogram of sides 120 mm x 50 mm. One of

the included angles between the sides is 70º.

10. A cricket ball is thrown at an inclination of 45º to the ground which is

horizontal over the range. If the projection is from the ground level and the
ball falls on the ground at a distance of 100 m from the point of projection,
trace the path of the ball and name the curve.
