Unit 6 Vocabulary

Abacus- The uppermost part of a CAPITAL, forming a slab upon which the
ARCHITRAVE rests

Amphora- an ancient jar with two handles and a narrow neck; used to hold oil or
wine

Architrave- The lowest member of an ENTABLATURE, resting directly on the


CAPITALS of COLUMNS or PILASTERS

Caryatid- a supporting column carved in the shape of a person

Cella- the main chamber of a Greek/Roman temple, built to house the cult image

Contrapposto- Relaxed pose, standing with weight on one leg

Cornice- the topmost member of a classical ENTABLATURE

Entablature- Divided into ARCHITRAVE, FRIEZE, and CORNICE

Friezes- the middle member of an ENTABLATURE, between the ARCHITRAVE and the
CORNICE. In the Doric ORDER, the frieze is decorated with triglyphs and metopes

Kore- Greek sculpture during archaic period

Kouros- male youths in Greek archaic period

Krater- large case used to mix wine and water in Greece

Metope- In the FRIEZE of an ENTABLATURE of the Doric ORDER, panel between the
TRIGLYPHS

Pediment- Triangular area forming the roof of a temple

Peristyle- The colonnade around a PERIPTERAL building or around a garden court

Stylobate- he masonry at ground level on which a column rests

Tesserae- small, usually square pieces of glass or other material used to make a
mosaic

Triglyph- in FRIEZES, surrounds the metopes
