Overview of ATM
 ATM-Asynchronous Transfer Mode.
 Can be used in LANs, MANs, or WANs.
 Can carry voice, data, video separately or simultaneously.
 A transfer mode in which the information is organized into
cells.
 It is asynchronous in the sense that the recurrence of cells
containing information from a particular user is not
necessarily periodic.

Overview of ATM
 ATM requires connections to be established before any
communication takes place.

 The connection is called a virtual circuit which could be

permanent or switched.

 Data rates from 25 to 622 Mbps.

 ATM guarantees that cells will not be disordered.

 The information field length is relatively small and fixed.

 ATM Interface Types:

 User-Network Interface (UNI)

– End node-to-switch connection

 Network Node Interface (NNI)

– Connection between two ATM switches

NNI Types
 Private NNI
 Used to connect two switches of different vendors in private ATM
Networks.
 NNI-ICI (B-ICI)
 ICI - Inter Carrier Interface
 Used to connect two ATM networks of two different service
providers.
 Public NNI (NNI-ISSI)
 ISSI - Inter Switch System Interface.
 Used to connect two switches of one public service provider.

NNI Cell Format
 Network-Network Interface (NNI)
– switch-to-switch format
– GFC becomes part of VPI field

UNI Cell Format
 User-Network Interface (UNI)
– host-to-switch format
– GFC: Generic Flow Control
– VCI: Virtual Circuit Identifier, VPI: Virtual Path Identifier
– CLP: Cell Loss Priority
– HEC: Header Error Check (CRC-8)
