MT5111 Iron and Steel Making (3 SKS)

Phenomena and technology of steel making starting from iron ore: the current conditions of
the steel industries, the reduction of iron ores from thermodynamical aspect, blast furnace,
direct reduction. From iron to steel: case study in electric arc and basic oxygen furnace. The
solidification process of steel in ingot method and continuous casting. Metallurgical
phenomena and processing technology of solid steel: hot rolling, cold rolling, and annealing
process as TMCP (Thermomechanical Controlled Process) for changing the shape and
improving steel quality. The current development in steel, i.e. AHSS (Advanced High
Strength Steel)

MT5112 Electrochemistry of Materials (+ Lab) (3 SKS)


The kinetics of electrolytic process; passivation; the relation of polarization curve and
potential, pH; the measurement technique of polarization curves. Electrolyte conductivity and
the prediction of ion activity coefficient for dilute solution. The difference between
electrochemical cell and electrolysis cell. The usage of polarization curves and potential-pH
diagram. Electrolysis process in industry: copper purification, zinc production, aluminum
production and the discussions of current efficiency, electricity needs, mass and energy
balance. The description about pulse current and periodic current reversal in metal
electroplating. Electroforming, electro-etching, and electro-machining. The Introduction to
solid electrolyte conductivity for explaining the current changing in semiconductor. Mass
balance in electrolytic processing and examples.

MT5121 Conventional Ceramics (3 SKS)


Introduction. Interaction between clay, water and fire for producing hard product due to the
phase transformation from clay to mullite phase. The use of clay, feldspar, and quartz as the
base material for ceramics. The application of conventional ceramics based on clay for eating
utensils, housewares, such as wash basin, toilet, bricks.

MT5122 Carbon & Graphite Materials (3 SKS)


Carbon fiber, gas phase impregnation, thermoset and thermoplastic resin as matrix, oxidation
and its prevention, the making and the characterization of C/C composite in laboratory scale,
the properties of carbon composite materials, the application of C/C composite, the summary
of the current technology and market analysis.

MT5123 Refractory Materials (3 SKS)

Refractory material for industrial application. Refractory materials are available from metal
and ceramic for steel melting industry that operate in the temperature til 1700°C, and for this
purpose the ladle that made from steel (Tm 1535°C) must be coated by refractory material that
can withstand this condition. Ceramic refractory material Magnesia, Alumina, Silica,
Magnesite, Dolomite, Chrome-Magnesite, Alumino-Silicates, binary system, ternary,
quartenary etc. Refractory material will degrade over time, or experience failure that needed
replacement of a new one. Characterization and identification are done based on ASTM
testing standard for ceramic material.

MT5124 Cement & Concrete Materials (3 SKS)

The physical, mechanical and chemical properties of concrete with its material compositions.
Correlation between concrete and its resulting properties, admixtures, high performance
concrete, the rehabilitation of concrete structure.

MT5131 Natural Polymers (3 SKS)


Natural rubber, polysaccharide, gluten, biopolymer resulting from biotechnology, other
biomaterial topics such as wood, bones, etc.

MT5132 Manufacturing of Polymer Composites (3 SKS)


Introduction; various applications of Polymer composites; physical and mechanical
properties; micromechanics; manufacturing processes: performs, dies, techniques for
thermoset and thermoplastic composites; secondary manufacturing processing: machining,
bonding, fixing; characterization and quality control: NDT and destructive testing, mechanical
testing; recycle problems, health and safety in manufacturing process of composite materials.

MT5141 Non-Destructive Test (3 SKS)

The role of NDT in quality control; the application of NDT techniques; Various forms of
defects that cannot be detected by NDT. Visual inspection, magnetic particle inspection,
liquid penetrant, eddy current, ultrasonic testing, radiography, neutrography, indentation
method, leak detection, acoustic emission, thermal inspection method, holographic
interferometry, crack depth measurement methods, thickness measurement methods, vibration
analysis, method for materials identification, microwave radiation. Analysis and
interpretation. Safety and inspection standards.

MT5142 Fracture Mechanics (3 SKS)


Introduction to fracture mechanics: historical background, fracture mechanics application,
Griffith criteria, stress intensity factor and its calculation. KIC value determination. Fracture
mechanics application in design. Initiation and sub-critical crack: fatigue, stress-corrosion,
corrosion-fatigue. Crack criteria. Microscopic aspect from fracture toughness. The application
of fracture mechanics in failure analysis.

MT5211 Powder Metallurgy (3 SKS)


Introduction: the reason and prospect of manufacturing product by using powder metallurgy
technology; fabrication of metal powder; characterization and parameter of metal powder.
Control of metal powder microstructure. Powder preparation before compaction process. The
kinds and parameter of compaction processes. Apparatus for compaction process. Kinds and
parameter of sintering process. Apparatus for sintering process. Final process for powder
metallurgy product. Characterization, properties and applications of the products. Industry
standard in powder metallurgy technology.

MT5221 Advanced Ceramics (3 SKS)

Description and application of advance ceramics. Ceramics material structures and its relation
with chemical, biology, mechanical, thermal, optical, electrical, magnetic, and nuclear
properties. Manufacturing processes and example of advance ceramic product. Electronic and
ionic mobility concept, non-stoichiometry in ceramics, and prediction of ceramic function.
Study of several advance ceramic development.

MT5222 Colloid Phenomena in Ceramics (3 SKS)


Surface and colloid as grayscale zone, general concept of surface and interface, surface
activity molecule bases, far range attractive force, electrostatic force and multi-layer
electricity, capillarity, solid surface, liquid-fluid interface, adsorption at solid-liquid interface,
colloid and its stability, emulsion, foam, aerosol, polymer at interface, colloid association :
micelle, vesikel, and membrane. Solubility, micellar catalyst, and micro emulsion, wetting
and distribution, friction, lubrication and abrasive, attachment.

MT5223 Ceramic Raw Materials (3 SKS)


The behavior of several minerals with certain compositions for getting the expected
properties. A short description about mineralogy (minerals for clay and stone formation), the
types and the distributions of the ores (liberation and separation), slip preparation (size
reduction, filtering, composition, ceramic body formation), ceramics firing, the various kinds
of ceramics characterizations, phase transformation after ceramics firing.

MT5224 Ceramics Plant Design (3 SKS)


Introduction to ceramic industry in Indonesia covering clay-based ceramics and non-clay-
based ceramic industries also introduction to the equipment and technology used which come
from overseas. At the beginning, the activity that can be done is maintenance of equipment
and then the next step is designing the equipment or modifying ceramic processing machines
for maintenance purpose or the making of ceramic plant. Understanding of raw material, the
processes used must be mastered. The design activity includes the gathering of data and
product information that will be manufactured, raw material selection, process design,
machine selection and design by considering related aspect.
MT5231 Fiber Technology (3 SKS)
Introduction: fiber classification and terms that is used; fiber manufacture technology; fiber
structure and properties, including natural fiber, polyamid fiber, polyester fiber, polyethylene
fiber, aramid fiber, glass fiber, carbon fiber (from PAN and pitch), boron fiber, silicon carbide
fiber (manufactured by using CVD and pyrolisis technique) and alumina fiber; application of
fiber in daily life; textile manufacturing technology and its development as composite raw
material.

Basic components of injection molding machines. Parameters in injection molding process.
Polymer raw material influence: amorphous and crystalline. Testing and failure analysis.
Troubleshooting in manufacturing process.

MT5241 Failure Analysis (3 SKS)


Failure analysis objectives, Failure modes review and summary, yield criteria/plastic
deformation initiation, stress concentration, static fracture, fracture mechanics review and
summary, fatigue fracture, Creep, embrittlement, corrosion, characterization technique, failure
analysis methods. Making reports.

MT5242 Heat & Surface Treatment (3 SKS)


Steel heat treatment basics, heat treatment processes, surface treatment and quality control
methods; alloying effects; defects on heat treatment; the role of surface treatment on
increasing a component strength and lifetime. Various surface treatments and its process
parameter: Mechanical Treatment, Thermal Treatment, Thermal-Spraying, CVD, PVD,
Electro-plating, Laser Surface Treatment, ion-implantation etc. The advantages and
disadvantages of each procesess. The effect of various surface treatments to the surfaces
properties. Surface treatment applications in the industry.

MT5243 Magnetic Materials Engineering (3 SKS)


Magnet field, flux density and magnetization; magnetic material and its calculation; magnetic
material properties; domain, domain wall and processes, magnetization and hysterisis curve,
magnetic order type, magnetic phase and critical phenomena; magnetic moment electronic;
magnetic material, engineering and application: soft magnet and electromagnet, hard magnet,
magnetic storage technology, material evaluation using magnetic technique.

MT5244 Biomaterials (3 SKS)


The application of materials such as metals, ceramics, polymer, hydrogel and natural material
for medical purposes; kinematics joint; biomechanics orthopedic, membrane, artificial organ
etc.

MT6001 Advanced Materials Characterization (3 SKS)


Introduction: background, the role of material characterization. Materials properties testing.
Analysis using several method: Metallography techniques, optical and x-ray spectroscopy,
mass spectroscopy, classic chemical method, resonance method, diffraction method, electron
or x-ray spectroscopy, method that based on sputtering phenomena or scattering,
chromatography, and other advance method.

MT6021 Sintering Theory (2 SKS)


Sintering processes and its influence on oxide stoichiometry in various ceramic functions.
Solid state, liquid-phase, and reactive sintering. Sintering phase and mass transfer when the
sintering occurs. Crystal structure and non-stoichiometry of oxide ceramics, defect structure,
description and equation of chemical reaction of ionic/electronic defect, electroneutrality and
also defect equilibrium. Defect predominance diagram and application in advanced-ceramics.

MT6022 Industrial Applications of Ceramics Materials (3 SKS)


Example of ceramic engineering application in various: metal melting industry,
petrochemical, oil and gas, construction, glass, ceramics, medical, machining, automotive,
energy, electricity, etc. The application in industry based on the superior properties in a
specific operation condition compare to metal that have been widely used till now. With the
advance of processing technology and characterization method, ceramic properties can be
predicted and improved. Kinds of raw material, composition and ceramic processing will
determine the microstructure of ceramic product which eventually affects the properties.
Specific case study in several applications in industry with its advantage and limitation of
certain ceramic material will give clearer understanding in the right material selection.

MT6041 Phase & Structure Identification of Materials(3 SKS)


General introduction about microstructure and macrostructure and its application.
Introduction about techniques, application and analysis of microstructure and microstructure.
The principles of optical microscope and electron microscope, microhardness, application
examples. Basic introduction about X-ray, crystal geometry, interaction between X-ray and
crystal which produce diffraction, various application of X-ray: texture, phase identification,
residual stress, etc.

MT6042 Statistical Data Analysis (3 SKS)


Basic concept, research methodology. Comparing two treatments: external reference
distribution, normal distribution, t-distribution, randomization, blocking, significance test,
confidence interval. Comparing more than two treatments: anova, diagnostic checking,
randomized blocks, latin square, graeco-latin square, hyper-graeco-latin square and balance
incomplete block design; effect measurement from variables: empirical model, factorial
design, fractional factorial design. Regression analysis. Response Surface Methods.
Experimental Design project.

MT6101 Structure & Mechanical Properties of Materials (3 SKS)


Relation between material structures and material properties. Mechanical properties,
mechanical testing method, and its interpretation, working process, material bonding.
Deformation, dislocation defect. Slip. Dislocation movement. Strengthening mechanism.
Softening mechanism. Use of phase diagram. Non equilibrium phase transformation. Heat
treatment processes for carbon steel and alloy steel. Review about cast iron. Precipitation
hardening. Strengthening by grain refinement. Failure criteria. Current development.

MT6102 Materials Aspect in Production Technology (3 SKS)


Introduction, the relation between manufacturing cost and various manufacturing processes in
manufacturing engineering material/component; raw material manufacturing processes;
welding processes; cutting processes; manufacturing processes through powder metallurgy
technology; manufacturing processes from polymer material; manufacturing processes from
ceramic material.

MT6111 Metallurgy of Plastic Deformation (3 SKS)


Main focus of this course is to explain metallurgical phenomena that involves plastic
deformation. This explanation starts with the condition and the criteria of plastic deformation.
The dislocation existence, morphology & movement will be studied and correlated with the
phenomena that happen because of plastic deformation, mainly strain hardening.
The material strengthening mechanism: dislocation density, solid solution, precipitation &
grain boundary, will be studied one by one and correlated with the interaction between
strengthening factor with dislocation movement and the force that is needed to move the
dislocation. The course is ended with the study of advance mechanism that is connected with
plastic deformation: TRIP (TRansformation Induced Plasticity) & TWIP (TWinning Induced
Plasticity) Phenomena.

MT6201 Selection & Design of Materials (3 SKS)


The change in Materials Selection from adhoc fashion to optimal material choice. Optimal
material choice elaboration from methodology to the case studies that emphasizes no longer in
the physics of materials but rather in the creation of data and information based knowledge
that contain in the materials. New material design to fulfill the requirement of optimal
material choice. Material design methodology and case studies that contain required material
properties (performance) formulation, determining material composition & structure
parameter, criteria & optimization formulation, and the control of those parameter.
Microstructural case studies for high strength material (static & dynamic), materials
application in the extreme environment (corrosion, low and high temperature).

MT6212 Technique and Metallurgy of Welding (3 SKS)

Introduction, Welding principles and definitions, Types of welding process: Oxyacetylene,


SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, SAW, ERW, EBW, etc. Working principal of welding machines,
Understanding on effect of parameters of welding process of welded product: PWHT,
Metallurgy of carbon steel welding: division of welded area, dilution phenomena, isothermal
curve, thermal cycle, phase transformation in HAZ, micro structure at welded area, welded
procedure and experiment and welded test: WPS, WPQR, defect, inspection of weld joint:
destructive and non destructive test, controlling of welded quality, welding of rust resistance
steel, super alloy welding, welding of aluminum and its alloy, welding of titanium and its
alloy, welding of super alloy, iron base, nickel base, and cobalt base super alloys, measuring

MT7211 Corrosion & Its Prevention Method (3 SKS)

Understanding corrosion phenomena as electro-chemistry process; anodic reaction, cathodic


reaction; polarization curve; corrosion types and mechanism: surface corrosion; pitting
corrosion; intergranular corrosion; crevice corrosion; stress induce corrosion; selective
leaching; galvanic corrosion; erosion corrosion; corrosion monitoring process; corrosion
cases; corrosion prevention methods; e.g. cathodic protection, impressed current cathodic

MT70Z1 Thesis (6 SKS)

Research based on literature study about an aspect of materials technology. Seminar related
to this research will be conducted after the research has been done.
